Game of Thrones

WHAT?!?????????

I did not like that twist. I literally had to pick my jaw up. What was everyone else's thoughts?

TurboMammoth 06-03-2013 08:39 AM

I do not watch the series (well, I just watched the first season) but I'm a big fan of the books. Was that the season finally of the third?

SoMuchFattitude 06-03-2013 08:49 AM

Not the season finale (episode before - they'll wrap up the 3rd book in the season finale). It was the Red Wedding.

That it what I was wondering!! It was probably... bloody :(

I was shocked when I red this part.

Missy Krissy 06-03-2013 09:28 AM

Like Turbo I read the books (on the 5th one right now) and haven't seen the latest season (gotta wait for them to be on dvds), but yeah, holy cow right???

When I read about what happened I was like, "NNNNnnnnnoooOOOOoooO!!!! How can this BE?!" It definitely changes some dynamics. Don't worry, it might be hard to believe but the story isn't over!

SoMuchFattitude 06-03-2013 09:50 AM

Missy Krissy - Yeah, my husband has read them all. I'm one of those people where I'm so detail oriented that I can't read the books and watch the series because the tiny differences kill me. We started the first season before he started the books. He's read them all and loves them. I may tap into reading them AFTER HBO finishes the series. lol

Scarlett 06-03-2013 11:10 AM

I read the books but need to catch up on GOT this season. I'm up to episode 3 and plan to visit my Aunt who has HBO soon.

It was an absolute shock but to be honest, Robb Stark was never one of my favorite characters. He was just too boring. It didn't upset me all that much.

TripSwitch 06-03-2013 11:54 AM

I was shocked too... But I was getting tired of that whole crew, especially the mother... She was really getting on my nerves... so I actually really liked that plot twist... And like that now it can move on and be a bit more complex than just the old "good prevailing over evil" thing... That's gets so boring.... I haven't read the books and have no intention of doing so.... So I have no idea what's going to happen next... But I'm definitely looking forward to a few other people getting wants coming to them... Especially that little blond kid "king"... God I hate that kid...I cant even tell you what I'd like see done too him...lol... But something tells me that blond chick with the dragons is going to do some serious damage next... So I'm looking forward that.... And Lord only know what that witch woman in the red is up to... I can't wait to see what see does... Not to mention that whole mess up at the "wall"... who knows what's gonna happen there...

So I'm actually looking forward to all the "payback" that's obviously coming now... Should be good.... Just sucks that we're gonna have to wait for so much of it, since there's only one episode left in this season... So it's probably not going to be till next year... That's always the worst part with HBO... :)

NeeneeKhaleesi 06-03-2013 01:18 PM

I too read the books and knew what was coming! Rob had noooo idea how to play game of thrones. It was such a deliciously unexpected plot twist. One of my favorite parts of the book. Sure, it sucks the f-ing PROTAGONIST DIED, (AGAIN(!)) but I was thrilled at the twisty shocking goodness.

Ijustcant 06-03-2013 01:32 PM

I KNOW! It was so unexpected. I won't ruin it for anyone, but lets just say yesterday's episode was a MUST SEE!

Desiderata 06-03-2013 01:47 PM

I love the show, but reading about it online is such a minefield for non-bookreaders. OP - you might add a warning to anyone who opens this thread that the posts in it will spoil anyone who didn't see the show last night. (I think it's fair to discuss events after they've aired, but because the thread topic is pretty generic, someone might not know what they're in for. I admit, I got spoiled on accident about the RW last year and wish I hadn't - so I am probably err on the over-cautious side on this subject. ... and yet I still keep poking around online, it's playing with fire!

NeeneeKhaleesi 06-03-2013 03:02 PM

Hmmm... The thread is asking for people's thoughts about the new episode last night. Seems to me if you didn't want spoilers about it, you'd stop reading right after the first post. Just sayin'.

Desiderata 06-03-2013 03:49 PM

Neenee - yep, and I said discussing it is fair game. My point was that before you open the thread, you see only the thread title - no spoiler tag warning or anything. It's not possible to edit thread titles, I think, but a simple "warning - spoilers ahead in this thread" in the first post was all my comment was about. Just as a heads up before anyone keeps reading. And like I said, I cop to being overly concerned here. :)

Back to the show -- my understanding is that they split book 3 into seasons 3 and 4, so next week's finale isn't even all of book 3. That means we're looking at a minimum of 8 seasons, if not more, right? I don't know how time continues to elapse in the books, but I worry about how old all the kid actors are going to be by the end (assuming any of them are still standing at this point). The shooting schedule and kids' growth spurts don't work well -- Bran and Arya already look so mature. Then again, you see 30 year olds playing HS kids on TV all the time...

When my boyfriend actually red that part in the book, he slammed the book on a table and swear that he was done with it. He was soooo frustrated LOL

(it lasted a whole month, but in the end he resumed the reading, he wanted to know what was coming next)

I was actually really frustrated when I red that in the book. Seriously, I DESPISED the SH*TTY FREYs. I really loved Rob, even if he was making weird/bad choices lately. I always was a big fan of Cat, but I have to admit that at some point I was while reading the books ''why don't you just go back to your INJURED 8 YEARS OLD SON up north.''

OMG, I thought this too! Not to mention 4 year old Rickon.

SPOILER ALERT:

**** I love how there's a theme of characters returning from or not really being dead! Whenever someone "dies" I ask myself, is this really it? ****

Completely shocked and like you...I did not like it. I really need to get the books!

SoMuchFattitude 06-04-2013 07:00 AM

Oh, I didn't spoil anything so didn't find it necessary to put a disclaimer. lol

Had there been a spoiler - I would have.

This is a really interesting article on why he wrote the Red Wedding the way he did.

MedChick87 06-04-2013 10:01 PM

I've read the book so I knew it was coming...but it was still shocking and sad to watch. I even watched the episode a second time last night and it was STILL crazy. I'm surprised they didn't make this the season finale, to be honest. I'm super excited to see what they show next week!

DazeGypsy 06-05-2013 12:58 PM

I haven't read the third book... I read the first two and watched the first two seasons. But then my computer crashed and I lost all the audiobooks before I could put book three on my iPod.

I need to wait until season three comes out on DVD to see it. Reading this thread is making me wonder what happens. You guys got me all excited for it now. :)

Desiderata 06-05-2013 01:28 PM

DazeGypsy - hope you won't have to wait long for the DVD!

MedChick - I read somewhere the observation that the penultimate episode (E9) each season has been extremely significant. (See: Ned, Blackwater Bay, and this.) Probably because I read that before the ep aired on Sunday, I was holding my breath the whole episode, just waiting for the worst. I can only imagine my anxiety level for E9 of the fourth season, at this rate. :p

OMG I didn't even realize the whole 9th episode trend!!! And I call myself a GoT nerd (smh).

Candeka 06-06-2013 09:11 PM

Yeah, my husband and I sat there in silence when it was happening.. then we both yelled at the TV. We complained about it for hours hahaha.

BananaMontana 06-07-2013 10:33 PM

I watched it with my husband, sister and brother in law. Of the 4 of us I was the only one who has read the books so instead of watching the scene I was watching their faces. Their expressions were priceless!

I try to not get too attached to any characters in the books. Martin is brutal

ShyHeather 06-08-2013 12:03 AM

While I read the book, and knew this was coming, I was still shocked and angered!!!

:carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot:SPOILER :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot:

I could not believe they butchered Robs wife! :'( That really tore me up. I hated the change, but I understand why they did it.

TheSecondHalf 06-08-2013 03:17 PM

My reaction was - meh. I am so over this whole boring season. Nothing has happened. Everyone is just wandering around for no good reason. Characters come and go and don't advance the plot at all. It's just been SO DARN BORING. Kill off whoever you want just for goodness sake, everyone stop wandering aimlessly and DO SOMETHING.

I could never read these books. I need something more compelling than, "That shocked you, didn't it!" to keep me going. If everything is a! shocking! twist! then nothing is shocking at all. It's called PLOT. Get some.

Doctor Who and GoT sucked this season. I am one bitter nerd.

It's funny, I thought the same thing about last season (and the 2nd book), other than Blackwater of course. I personally think this season has stepped it up with action and plot progression. Yes, a lot of it is shocking twists, but that's been Martin's game from the first book/season (a.k.a. killing off the main character).

Then you will most likely dislike the fifth season. There are little bits and pieces in the book that are pretty interesting, but overall, it took a while for me to push through it. I pray they don't break the forth book into two seasons, as it wasn't that thrilling.

Still working on the fifth book . . . I might finish by time he releases the next book. :joker:

VermontMom 06-08-2013 06:42 PM

I felt that something was up when that disgusting, leering Walder Frey seemed to let the snub go by...I said so to my husband, (who has read the books) and all he said was 'remember that he said the red wine would flow" or something like that...I sat there with my eyes like saucers and my mouth open and almost gagging.

And poor Arya!! and that beautiful wolf. I had hoped she could get to his cage and leg him out. But he would have been killed then too.

How can next week's episode cover a little of everyone in just an hour?!

I agree too! Particularly the Brienne and Jaime scenes have exceeded my expectations.

TheSecondHalf 06-08-2013 07:19 PM

There were some really GREAT moments this season but a lot of major characters just sort of wandered around.
