Acid Reflux, Water, IBS

we have all had the recommended 8 glasses thrown at us for ages. I personally don't buy into that, but I do drink more water then the average person. For the last month and a half, I kept noticing my urine was SO dark, and then it dawned on me that I had reverted to drinking soft drinks, and promptly pulled the plug on that and started pounding back the water again.

What I'm concerned about is finding a balance. I have Acid Reflux, and IBS, and I find that sometimes I get that heartburny, acidy, gross feeling in my throat and burp up water sometimes. I figure that means I'm drinking too much, and dial back. But then other times, even when I'm drinking plenty of water, my urine is a little too dark for my liking.

Since I have IBS, my food has a tendency to just sit in my stomach sometimes instead of digesting--and while I'm not sure if water does that, too-- I find it hard to get in ANY when I'm having an attack. During those instances, is pedialyte suitable for me to drink, or is there too much sugar? I literally cannot eat or drink anything for 20 minutes, to several hours, and sometimes it lasts for days (I'll "recover," but then eat something, and it will sit and sit, I'll finally vomit it up, then try to eat again, rinse, wash, and repeat). I once lost 15lb from a week and a half of not being able to eat and constantly throwing up. My face was gaunt and I looked sickly from being so dehydrated. Had I not started drinking the pedialyte, I probably would have ended up in the hospital.

I know it probably wouldn't be a problem once-in-a-while, but when I get stressed, especially, I seem to have episodes every other week, and I can see it really throwing off my weight loss efforts.

Have you talked to your doctor about this?

I wouldn't worry about calories in Pedialyte if it is accounted for but you might try an 'adult' electrolyte balancing solution.

I like Nuun tablets or Ultima powder. Emergen-c also has an electrolyte powder but for some reason, it makes me nauseous.

This sounds more serious than IBS to me! I think you should see your doctor - and try to get a referral to a gastroenterologist. Maybe you have food allergies of some sort?

Not sure about a food allergy, but I've already seen a gastroenterologist. Right now we're kind of stumped, but we're treating it as IBS because we don't know what else it could be.
