What are you reading November 2012?

A new month, new books to share. Please share with us what you are currently reading.

I'm doing a quick read of Go Ask Alice.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Missy Krissy 11-02-2012 02:08 PM

I enjoyed both "Go Ask Alice" and "The Bell Jar."

I just started reading "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" by Gregory Maguire.

Lakilaulea 11-02-2012 02:15 PM

You know, I've been trying to finish I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak.. I liked his other novel so much, but this one hasn't really captured my interest yet. I'm thinking of putting it down and getting John Dies at the End. I've heard about it and just saw they made a movie about with with Paul Giamatti, who I think is brilliant. Has anyone read it? Everytime I hear a movie is coming out based on a novel, I like to read the novel first. This movie looks really good, so I think I wanna get the book.

mnemosyne 11-02-2012 02:40 PM

Sorry, Lakilaulea, I have not read (or hah! even heard of) John Dies at the End so I have no advice.

I have nearly finished The Peppered Moth by Margaret Drabble. I tried to read it once before and got bogged down part-way through. I struggled again with it for the first 20-40 pages, but then found it really engaging though admittedly dense at times. Drabble uses an intrusive narrative voice that I find alternately charming and obstructive, but often unexpectedly elegant and moving.

I'm not sure what's next.

maryem 11-02-2012 07:44 PM

I'm currently reading The ALchimist by Paulo Choelo in frensh !! i'm only few pages in and i'm already loving it !!

wtfudge 11-02-2012 09:31 PM

Haha, no judging? ;)

"Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang" - Chelsea Handler

alinnell 11-04-2012 10:37 AM

Still reading The Warning. I haven't decided if it is good or not. In some ways I think he could get to the point with fewer words and less explanation (let the reader figure it out rather than spell it all out). I've been rather busy the past few weeks and have not had a lot of time to read. Given the extra hour today I might get some done!

Phae 11-04-2012 01:14 PM

I'm reading a trilogy by Ben Aaronovitch. The first book was "Rivers of London" and I just finished it so now I am onto "Moon Over Soho" which is the next book.

I just moved to London a month and a half ago from Ontario and the books take place in London so I am getting a kick out of reading about places I now recognize. :)

katylil 11-04-2012 02:19 PM

I just finished The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory and have Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier lined up to read next.

Lakilaulea: I read Zusak's The Book Thief a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. I cried my way through the entire last 50 or so pages! I've been meaning to pick up I Am The Messenger but havent quite got round to it yet. Is it really that bad?

gailr42 11-05-2012 12:20 AM

Broken Harbor by Tana French. This book is a police procedural cum psychological study. I got the audio book from the library to listen to while I walk. So far, I am enjoying it, and it sure helps the time go by!

Melonlefey 11-05-2012 05:28 PM

The bell Jar is one of my all time Favorites!

I love to reread my favorites, so I'm making quick work of A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich while I wait for Paradise Lost/regained to come in the mail. I'm really excited for that.

owlsteazombies 11-05-2012 10:14 PM

John dies at the end was trippy!! Good, but trippy!!

And I'm reading bared to you and reflected in you by Sylvia day. I love me some dirty bathtub reads. I'm also re-reading world war z.

Awesome! So you recommend it then? I wanna get it almost solely because of the movie coming out. Plus, I kinda like that trippy genre.

I read Paradise Lost/Regained in a college class on Milton. Loved them both, but I required the discipline of the class to keep me reading them. If you are reading them for pleasure I am impressed. Ditto Melville: I really loved Moby Dick, and it was probably worth sitting through his lesser works to get there, but I required the discipline of the college setting to get through.

I wish all zombie books were like WWZ. Loved it.

I've finished The Peppered Moth and am now reading Baudolino by Umberto Eco. I'm enjoying it thus far.

froggydawgy 11-06-2012 10:26 PM

City of Saints by Andrew Hunt.

Set in Salt Lake City in the 30s. A police procedural.
Really interesting to compare the resources available
in the 30s (not much) and the procedures they were
able to do (and can not do now).

Clumsy 11-07-2012 06:03 PM

I'm just finishing Song of Achilles and will be starting Anna Karinina next. After that I'm going to try and find a copy of Pontypool Changes Everything. I've been dying to read it for a while now.

BrownEyedVeggie 11-12-2012 03:57 PM

I am looking to pick up The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom. It looks interesting.

I read The Time Keeper from cover to cover in an afternoon. I have to say that it was a simple yet thoughtful read. I'd recommend it.

Now on to the next. I just picked up, Eat That Frog! 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time

Palestrina 11-14-2012 08:07 AM

Book 1 of Game of Thrones!

Misti in Seattle 11-14-2012 08:14 AM

I just finished "Food Rules" by Michael Pollan and am now reading his "The Omnivore's Dilemma." Very educational!! Next I look forward to reading Pollan's "In Defense of Food." I've watched his videos on YouTube and went out and bought the books.

themusicalfruit 11-14-2012 11:54 PM

The Stand by Stephen King

Lucky duck. Wish I could read the A Song of Ice and Fire series again for the first time. So many easter eggs and payoffs for an attentive reader. I've read them multiple times and still notice loads of things missed on previous reads.

gardenerjoy 11-15-2012 06:34 PM

Misti in Seattle: I loved Pollan's books. They really form the basis of how I eat today.

I'm reading A History of Ancient Britain by Neil Oliver -- much less dry than it sounds. It probably helps that it's a companion book to a BBC show, although I haven't seen the show.

Along with that, I'm reading a novel set in Britain when the Romans and Druids were cohabiting the island with only nominal peace. It's called The Forest House and is by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

if you're interested in other books related to the food industry, one that i really liked was tomatoland, by barry estabrook. and if you're interested in aquaculture, there's four fish,bu paul greenberg.

i'm currently reading nickel and dimed. it's about a woman who takes on some of the country's more labor-bearing jobs, describing her experiences.

Bec259 11-17-2012 10:19 PM

Reflected In You - Sylvia Day (love a bit of mummy porn & soo much better than 50 Shades)
I have all the Harry Potter books on my Kindle so starting on them next.

gardenerjoy 11-18-2012 12:26 PM

polymertastic: I've heard good things about Tomatoland. You might like The Good Food Revolution by Will Allen. It's about how one guy is growing food in the urban environment with intensive food production including tilapia in a greenhouse.

Bec259: Reading all the Harry Potter books sounds like fun!

owlsteazombies 11-18-2012 01:18 PM

Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore, and since it's around Xmas, I'll be re-reading his book: The Stupidest Angel.

I also picked up the Discovery of Witches series, which I hope is good! And the Nicholas Flamel: The Alchemist series..

There's a new sookie stackhouse in there somewhere, too, but those are just begrudingly read now since I've made the commitment with the rest of the series and the show..

BrownEyedVeggie 11-19-2012 07:56 AM

Book Club

I just picked up Will Schwalbe's The End of Your Life Book Club.

Misti in Seattle 11-19-2012 08:07 AM

I am now reading "In Defense of Food" by Michael Polland. gardenerjoy I also base a lot of my eating around his thinking... and people are commenting on my increased pep and improvement in my complexion!!! And I feel it too!!!

Thanks to all for the other book suggestions. I have also been looking at Steve Ettlinger's book "Twinkie: Deconstructed." Haven't read it yet. Just googled Tomatoland -- have to get to work so will look more into these later. Unfortunately I can't eat fish except tuna but there is probably a lot of good info in that one anyway

gardenerjoy 11-26-2012 12:01 PM

I finished The Forest House by Marion Zimmer Bradley. A good read -- one of those books that it's hard to know what to pick up next. I went with a middle grade novel called Ghost Knight by Cornelia Funke. It was fun. I haven't decided what I'm going to pick up next.

TurboMammoth 11-26-2012 12:17 PM

Life Of Pi of Yann Martel :)

CanadianCutie 11-26-2012 12:20 PM

Still reading Dexter is Delicious. I have about 70 pages left, but my reading time is limited, as the socket my lamp was plugged into decided not to work anymore, so no reading before bed unless I have the overhead light on.

mimsyborogoves 11-26-2012 12:41 PM

I'm reading The Wizard of Oz series. Currently on book 1. :)

alinnell 11-26-2012 12:56 PM

Just started The Round House. Beautiful writing for a difficult subject. So far I really like it.

Smiling_Sara 11-27-2012 10:51 AM

still struggling with the last book of the 50 shades trilogy. Have about 100 pages left.

EagleRiverDee 11-27-2012 12:41 PM

I've got a couple going:

Spontaneous Happiness - Dr. Andrew Weil
Last Call - George Wier

And I'm getting ready to start "Blood Feud" by JD Nixon, the third in a series. I really enjoy her books.
