Recommendations for documentaries

  • Every year I make up goals for myself and one of the goals for this year was to watch four documentaries on DVD. So far I've seen the documentary about the Elmo puppeteer and one about an elderly fashion photographer named Bill Cunningham, which was surprisingly interesting. Anyway, a few other recommendations I received weren't at my library (frugality is another goal this year!) so I thought I'd see what some other people had watched. Any recommendations? Thank you!
  • I love documentaries... I watch them all the time... I just watched one the other day that was pretty good called "Marathon Boy" about a boy in India who had run some crazy number of marathons by the the time he was only 4 years old!!! It was pretty shocking on a number of levels... But just seeing the staggering cultural and economic differences in this world was definitely eye opening to say the least...

I'm a huge fan of Ken Burns, so I see everything he does... Loved the Civil War, Jazz, and Baseball... But I really liked his last one on Prohibition... I definitely recommend that one...

And his brother, Rick Burns did one called "New York" that is epic and just absolutely amazing IMHO...

Pretty much anything from PBS's American Experience is worth seeing...
  • I have been watching some documentaries on YouTube about the obesity crisis and also about how food is processed, etc. It really helps to keep me inspired to keep up my healthful eating and workout plan and stay away as much as possible from the processed "food-like substances" as Michael Pollan calls them. He has some great videos.
  • "The Dancing Outlaw" I'm from Appalachia so it's a little dear to my heart, but the guy it's about is a legend. It's funny to boot. You can yourube it if you're interested.
