Help with a new bed!
 

I recently got a new bed frame and mattress, I bought them from 2 different shops so it was only once I had them both together I realized the bed seemed a lot lower than it did in the shop.

I have a real aversion to beds which are low to the ground, so I've been trying to think of solutions to raise the bed or mattress up. I'm very happy with the frames look I just hate being low to the ground! At the moment the mattress is just sitting on wooden slats/and a beam. I don't think putting risers under the legs will work as it's more of a sleigh style bed and visible risers would ruin the look of it.

I have been considering a box spring, which I *think* might be what I need-But I don't think they're very common in the UK so I'm not positive. They look a lot like divan bases to me so I'm not sure if they're the same thing?

I'd love a bit of advice, as I really don't have much knowledge about this kind of thing!

Risers plus a bit longer bed skirt? Unless you want the sleigh part to show, that is...

When you buy a mattress , doesn't a box spring come with it ?

yeah im betting it is the box spring you are missing... the divan base look sort of like a box spring with legs. a box spring is pretty much just a wooden frame with slats going across along the bottom and top. Then covered in some sort of fabric. The nicer ones will have springs in it. Height wise it is usually about the same as a mattress so itll add 1-1.5 feet to the height of your bed

Yeah, I've had a quick look online and I couldn't find any box springs from UK retailers. I'm wondering if I could sub the box for a divan base as I know the legs can be unscrewed usually, they quite often have springs in too so I imagine it would be similar.

@bargoo box springs seem to be pretty unheard of here, buying a bed is just the frame and mattress. I'm sure you must be able to get them somewhere but I imagine they will probably come with a huge price tag as they are hard to come by.

Sadly the raisers couldn't be covered by a skirt as all the bed linen sits inside the bed frame.

If the feet screw off then yeah id think it would work as long as you get the size that matches the mattress

If you can't get a boxspring, could you get a very inexpensive mattress that's the same size? Then put the cheap mattress underneath your new mattress?

I had a friend who had 2 mattresses on top of each other but I recall the bed was kinda like sitting on jelly :P I'm not sure if there would be any way to get around this?

I think I am probably going to buy a divan base soon, my bed frame is a good couple of inches bigger than a standard 4'6 double so it should fit easily. I'm not sure what the maximum weight for a bed is but the base shouldn't be too heavy...

Hmm....What about putting a solid piece of plywood between the two mattresses to firm it up?

Do you know anyone handy that can build you a boxspring?

I was going to suggest another mattress, too. Get the firmest one you can find and as Quiet Ballerina has said , a piece of plywood
between them.
What size is your mattress ?
The only divans I am familiar with are twin size, wouldn't work on a full size bed.

I was going to suggest this too! They are a very simple wood frame. I'd bet you could build it yourself. I'd bet all you'd have to do is take the dimentions to a store like Lowe's or Home Depot (IDK the UK equivalent or if they have those there) and tell them what you are building and they'd cut all the wood for you and tell you how to build it. Then all you'd have to do would be to staple the frabric of your choosing over the wooden frame. I can't imagine it would be very expensive. Just wood, nails, some frabric and staples.

Oooooooooor maybe I'm on Pinterest too much and have fooled myself into thinking I can DIY everything LOL.
