Even if you can't wear your hair down, you could wear it back rather than up. A loose pony tail, gathered low can still cover your ears.
When I had a really disgusting rash on my right earlobe. While it healed (when I wasn't home) I'd pull my hair back, but low into a ponytail or loose but so my hair covered my ears. I never wear it down, because I absolutely hate having stray hairs falling in front of my face.
And I agree that gluing an earing to a plug would also be a great option. So long as the earing is slightly larger than the plug, it should camouflage the plug completely. You could bend the post back, or you could go to JoAnn's, Michael's or even Walmart and find jewelry making bits that ccould be used as an earing. It just has to be a flat disk that is slightly larger than your gauge.
Good luck.
