Compliments
So, I'm pretty socially awkward, although, by looking at me you probably wouldn't guess it. (I'm young, have tattoo sleeves, as well as tattoos in various other places, piercings, etc.) I always want to come off as friendly, maybe compliment people sometimes, but I never know how to without seeming awkward or creepy. For example, I'd want to tell someone they have a cute haircut, nice outfit, etc. But I don't want to annoy, embarrass, or make someone feel uncomfortable. Suggestions? Maybe I should just not try? lol

You smile and say "Hey! Cute haircut!" or "Hey! Nice outfit!" and let it be.
KISS = Keep it simple, silly. Don't overthink it. You are passing out feel good happies, and with practice, you will grow comfortable with it. You aren't being MEAN. A. :) |
I always compliment total strangers if I like what they are wearing. I have never had anybody be less than flattered by it. It usually goes like, "Those shoes are so cute!" Or "I like that shirt!" Only if I actually like it, though.

Just be real. If someone has cute shoes or a cute bag, tell them so. I do all the time, even to complete strangers.
Made the mistake of commenting on some guy's ink once, (it was SUCH a nice pinup!) and he says "Oh yeah, I have to get that covered up, it's my ex-wife". Boo :( |
I absolutely love to compliment people! (I've always been very devil-may-care about being forward with people though) I'm always super flattered if someone takes the time to compliment me, especially if I don't know them, so I always make an effort to do the same for others.

It's really admirable that you have this project to become nicer and friendlier! Compliments are good, but I find that friendliness is really about showing *interest* in other people. Excessive reliance on compliments can make a person seem insecure (and insincere) but it is always appropriate to be interested in other people and to ask them questions about themselves. And smile, natch. :)

I like to compliment people, I think if you are honest with your compliments then it won't come off as creepy or awkward. It's really nice to make someone feel good, I know when I get a compliment it makes me happy. I think people need to compliment others more often!

It may be something that the more you do the more comfortable you will be with it. Just say it, don't over think it, like others said.

I think it's fine to say "Great outfit", "Great shoes" or "Great haircut!". However if you're complimenting weight loss or something like that, I tend to use "Wow, you look terrific!" instead. Some people don't want their weight loss pointed out, but saying they look terrific- who can be offended at that?
