This makes me sad! I send Christmas cards to a pretty extensive list, and I write out a longer message in each (usually I fill the card up), including holiday greetings. I do it because I have the time to think about each person on my list and send them good thoughts for the New Year, and because I really ENJOY writing them and taking that moment to think about each of my loved ones. I hope that no one who doesn't have the time, or who doesn't enjoy it, feels obligated to do so just because I sent the card!

I don't send out a huge number of cards, but I do spend a little time writing notes. I get the (bragging, ha) family newsletter, and some that are just signed that I'd love to hear more from, but I'm not peeved, more panged (not too serious, ha). I think it's nice to write a note, I do enjoy it though it can be a little tiring (and I have horrible hand writing to boot). Over time, I've let go of a lot of the "keeping a balance " mentality, and just try to enjoy giving what I give (and if someone doesn't seem to want to reciprocate, whether it's cards or gifts, I won't waste my energies).
It's an extremely busy time of year, and people have lots of restrictions, money, time, energy.
