I have a gym playlist that's made of rock, pop, rap and hip hop. My fave for getting me going is Get Low by Lil Jon but it always makes me wanna dance (which I'm not good at!) or sing (see dancing!) so I have to keep reminding myself that I'm in public!!! Ha!
I've been listening to this album for the last week at the gym: http://illegal-art.net/allday/(If the link doesn't work it's called Girl Talk - All Day) It's a bunch of songs mashed up to create new ones and it's really fun to run to. Plus it's free

haha I do the same thing, but I usually DO end up singing loudly (and horribly).
Some of my favorite tunes would have to be Hot blooded by Foreigner, pretty much anything by ACDC (im a biiiig rock fan), and "old skool" rap, like mc hammer, sir mix a lot.....yeah
Oh, man, you don't even want to know. LOL! I haven't listened to modern music since 1990, though I'll still listen to new music by artists I liked way back in the 70s.
(Though I'd heard of her, for example, I never actually heard a Lady Gaga song until about a week ago.)
When I work out, I fall back on Queen, Meat Loaf, the Rocky soundtracks, and—yes, I'm serious—Frank Sinatra and songs from the Great American Songbook. The latter is my favorite music of all time. I will even run and lift weights to those old songs. As much as I like a good beat, often I like the zen that those songs provide me.
I also like to work out to strong instrumental soundtracks. I've got the new Tron soundtrack on my iPod right now.

Get Low is my favorite too! LOL!

Three Days Grace "Pain" always makes me smile when I'm working out!
I need a great beat and really loud for my C25K workouts. But for everything else, I workout in a group and have adjusted to either quiet (because we are all concentrating/doing an interval) or chatting with my workout buddies instead of music.

Just had to comment on this. I love Meatloaf!
Some other really good songs are:
Know Your Enemy by Green Day
Waka Waka by Shakira
Goodbye by Kristina DeBarge
Thekittycat Dolls - When I grow up. [ Apparently I can't put their real name here. But I'm sure you all know who they are Lol.. ] Has a great beat to keep you steady in working out, makes you want to dance and just listening to them I feel super sexy. Haha
If you're into any kind of technoish music. Showtek is good too.
