1970's size 6?
 

What would a size 6 in the early 70's probably be equivalent to today? My aunt told me that she used to be very skinny and wore a size 6, and then said to my mom it was before she knew her. So I did some math... they met when my aunt was about 25, 30 years ago (1980ish?) and I highly doubt it was when my aunt was 10, so I'm guessing somewhere in between age 10 and 25 which would be... anywhere from 1965 to 1980, but PROBABLY in the late 60's or early 70's. So I was just wondering what a size 6 at that time period would be now.. kind of curious.

Roughly a size 4 nowadays. Back then, sizes were mandated by some standards (which I'm sure you can find), and after the industry standards were made voluntary in the early 80s, size creep started happening.

After doing some research, I think a size 2 may be closer to the truth. She was tiny for those days, when models wore a 6, and a size 8 was considered a perfect woman's figure.

Ahh, the joys of vanity sizing. Back in the 1950's Marilyn Monroe was a size 16, today she would be around a size 6. Generally speaking, clothing sized in the 1950s can be cut in half for an idea of today's sizing. Even with the sizes slowing changing, I'd guess your aunt in the 70's would have been around a 2/4 by today's standards.

I can't answer for sure but I'm going to say a 2 in today sizes.

I had saved a favorite pair of 3/4 jeans from 1988 . In 2000 I could wear a 3/4. I sure couldn't get those 1988 size 3/4 over my hips even.

Agree. A 1970's size 6 would be a 2 or maybe 4, if it was generously cut for its time.

I think a 70's 6 would definitely fall about a 0/2 range nowadays. When I weighed about the same back in the late 70's (Gawd, I am old) I remember wearing 6's and 8's. But then again, jeans used to go clear up to just under my boobs and now they only seem to go to the hipbones........and that really is not a bad thing IMHO.

I was 16 in the mid 60's, weighed 103 pounds and wore a 0/1. But they were marketed, I believe for less mature figures. In the mid 70's when I again weighed 103 but had delivered a baby (and lost the weight) I was wearing size 6 and years later even size 8 at 110 pounds. Amazing how that happens.
I had always heard that Marilyn Monroe was a size 14, which I am today, but like someone said that would be about a 6-8 by today's standards.
Clothing sizes are so way out there..inconsistent. Hard to tell anyone who wants to buy you clothing what size to buy. My DH will not even attempt it anymore. (but darn if those gift cards aren't nice!!)

You know, I'm 44 and when I was a teenager I was really skinny and wore a 6 or an 8 (early 80's) and I was wondering the same thing. Then before I gained weight around 1998, I was in a 4, but was the same size...so I'd say a size 4.

Well, circa 1985 I wore a size 8 at about 120 pounds, and now I wear a size 6 at about 135 pounds. Some I'm thinking a size 6 in the 1970s was pretty tiny.

Oh wow! And my aunt is 5'11 too... 5'11" and a size 2? Does. Not. Compute. Geez I look thin and I wear a size 10!

My mom's 1970 wedding gown in size 3 looks like a 00.

My mom saved her size 6 jeans from the 70s. And my cousin, who is also a size 6 (same height as my mom too), tried them on. She couldn't get them over her thighs.
