Walter Cronkite passes

MAN. A true voice for a generation. He covered THE major stories -- JFK, the Lunar landing...the best newsman EVER. So sad :(

Believe it or not, there was a time when you could trust the news. This truly marks the end of an era.

He will be missed.

I will never forget when he covered the assassination of JGK and the lunar landing. The sound of his voice is embedded in my brain. There isn't anyone currently on any of the so called "news" channels who can touch him. You could trust what he told you. Today I find it had to watch the news without getting angry on the way our news stations have sold us out. Case in point, we needed 4 hours of CNN, MS NBC and FOX News coverage of Michael Jackson's memorial. That was NOT news, that was paid advertisement.

1. Uh, JGK?:?: ::ducks & runs::

2. Wall-to-wall coverage of Jackson's memorial service had its place, and that place was on MTV, or VH1, or BET. NOT ABC, CBS, NBC or CNN. (Gimme 20 lashes with the wet lo-carb noodle for having the temerity to peek at the streaming videos. If I should watch any musician's funeral on TV it shoulda been Pavarotti's.) Leave the celebrity news to the celebrity gossip media (ETA 07.20, and note the date: Neil Armstrong's moonwalk: BIG news; Jackson's moonwalk: NOT news!) and let the hard news outlets cover the funerals of heads of state and other serious newsmakers. And their own iconic news anchors: if ABC could 'vise Howard K. Smith's funeral, then assuming the next of kin are cool with it CBS can and should 'vise Cronkite's send-off. So long Uncle Walter, it's been good to know ya

The news was better with Walter....Chet and David...

Just my opinion but I think Walter Cronkite just gave up on living when he saw all of the coverage of Michal Jackson's death. The day real news reporting died.

A true loss for real journalism. He will be missed. :(

mrsaugie 07-19-2009 09:08 PM

it is sad not only will the world of journalism miss him but the world of ham radio as well.

dutchgirl 07-19-2009 11:56 PM

He was one from the old school of journalism, he told the truth without spin and wasn't afraid to kick the shins of authority figures or government.
Who among journalists nowadays has the courage to do so?
He was an icon and will be deeply missed!
