MA to possibly follow NY and require calorie information at stores?

Is Baskin-Robbins worried that customers might get freaked out by this??

Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cup Shake - Large
Calories 2320
Total Fat 150g % Daily Value - 231%
Saturated Fat 60g % Daily Value - 300%
Cholesterol 235mg
Sodium 1320mg
Total Carbohydrates 204g
Sugar 183g

3 times the daily saturated fat limit!!!

Or maybe:

Chocolate Oreo® Shake - Large
Calories 2600
Total Fat 135g
Total Carbohydrates 333g
Sugar 263g

Aw..I'm being so mean to Baskin-Robbins - how about a nice, healthy smoothie! Fruit, it's so GOOD for you!

Berry Pomegranate Banana Fruit Blast Smoothie - Large
Calories 1020
Total Carbohydrates 250g
Sugar 232g

(to be fair the smoothie only has 1.5 grams of fat!!!)

Oh, forget the shakes, let's have a nice little sundae!

Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cup Sundae
Calories 1250
Total Fat 81g
Cholesterol 100mg
Sodium 680mg
Total Carbohydrates 108g
Sugar 91g

I did pick the large of every size for dramatic effect, but it's not the small is a healthy little treat either!

I'm a huge fan of a chocolate dipped cone - a child size is 230 calories - still outside of my usual "treat" limit! A large chocolate dipped cone (what I used to always get) is nearly 800 calories!! Just blows my mind how many calories I used to eat without knowing it. I used to feel so virtuous to get a dipped cone instead of a sundae.

I am also hugely amused what BR has to say under the picture of the Large Chocolate dipped cone:

Our new smooth and creamy Vanilla Soft Serve cone dipped in chocolate is a sweet treat that’s so delicious you’ll want seconds.

Oh yeah - let me have TWO for 1520 calories!!! I just think it's IRRESPONSIBLE. They sell calorie fat bombs and then say it's OKAY to order 2! That takes "lather rinse repeat" to a scary unhealthy level!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

I used to eat all kinds of that ice creamy / milkshake / baskin robbins type stuff all the time.

And to think back then I sometimes wondered why I was fat.

Man. I loved chocolate oreo shakes. But 135g fat?! 333g carbs?! (highly refined at that) GOOD GOD. That thing has way more calories than I eat in a day.

Thanks for posting this, Glory - your calorie-content related threads lately have been a super interesting read:)

ITA. Your posts have been quite informative.

All chains in Calif are going to be required to post nutritional info. I'm not sure when.

I think I've been to Baskin Robbins once and it was when I was younger so I'm not sure if they had shakes back then. That is amazing. I did used to enjoy Ruby's shakes and I hate to think how many calories are in those. One of my friends loves Ruby's oreo shake, I was a big fan of their peanut butter shake and sometimes their orange creamsicle shake. If California chains are going to post nutritional information, I know Ruby's will be in trouble.

I went to Chick-Fil-A last week and got sucked in by a Peppermint Chocolate Chip shake. 850 calories. Didn't even look at the fat count. I drank half and beat myself up for days. I don't know what I would do if I had one of those Reese's shakes! Good grief.

Ok back to Ruby's, tried to check out their nutritional information. Surprise they have none posted on their website although the daily plate has some info. They have a de 'lite' ful burger which is supposed to be an alternative to their regular burgers. (I haven't been there in YEARS so this wasn't an option way back when)

Their "Lite" burger has 825 calories, 49g of fat
Their regular burger has 709 calories, 41g of fat.

Huh?

They have something called Fit Fries that has 721 calories and 34g of fat.

And daily plate does have their peanut butter shake, 12 fl oz, calories 509, 25g of fat. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Well I remember going to Ruby's and they'd give you the glass of shake and also the container they made it in and was a bit more than 12 ozs.

I found an article on the Calif law. It will be for chains of 20 or more stores in the state. So, the Olive Gardens, Burger Kings, McDs and such will be required to do it. I don't know how many stores some place like TGI Friday's have in this state.

I fully agree. It may be a chain, but there is still a person responsible for making these decisions in the name of money, and it is inhuman.

nelie 01-09-2009 02:17 PM

I wonder if the California law would prevent some chains from opening up more chains in the state?

I could easily see 20 TGI Fridays in the state as well as other large chains.

Ruby's definitely has 20 locations in the state.

cbmare 01-09-2009 02:22 PM

Ruby's must be in So. Cal. I don't recall any up in the Bay Area.

I would think that some chains may not want to open. I know Quizno's has more than 20 stores. They have been so nasty about their nutritional info. I think it is great that they will have to comply.

nelie 01-09-2009 02:49 PM

I guess they are So Cal only. Another thing So Cal has a lot of are taco shops but even if they have chains, they generally don't have very many. I remember when I was in high school, there was some controversy with some of the taco shops in that they had multiple locations but weren't registered as a chain (or something like that). They ended up splitting up and making every store a different name so that they didn't have to pay some fee that chain restaurants have to pay.
