One Good Holiday Tune

I bought a CD yesterday called the "Belles of Christmas". Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee ... Connie Francis singing "I'll be Home for Christmas" made me cry both times through!

Got a favourite?

jules1216 12-07-2008 11:10 AM

I love Christmas music--can't say there's just one. I drive my husband and kids and coworkers crazy!!

bargoo 12-07-2008 11:11 AM

Remembering that is the birth of Jesus we are celebrating my favorites are "Joy To The World" and " Oh Come All Ye Faithful" , but I also love "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

i like brad paisleys christmas cd, which is strange because i cant stand country music......but the cd is wonderful

There are so many Christmas songs that I love, but I will say that "maybe" my favorite one of all is Little Drummer Boy. For me, the song reinforces what the true meaning of the SEASON is all about....the birth of hope~ love ~ eternity ~ peace

I love David Bowie and Bing Crosby's version and of course Bob Seger's, they are both on youtube.... Here is the version by Jars of Clay.

Angels We Have Heard on High - with harmony and acapella.

My all-time favorite Christmas CD is "Boney M's 20 Greatest" (I think that's the title--not too sure, but it's definitely Boney M). Love it, I have to listen to it every year. It is so upbeat, it never fails to put me in the Christmas spirit.

I think my favorite tune off that one is "Little Drummer Boy".

happy2bme 12-08-2008 12:06 AM

Last week Tony Bennet sang I'll Be Home for Christmas with the Duke Ellington orchestra. While it was a great arrangement, I thought it was the wrong song for a swingy jazz style because that song is actually a sad song on longing and missing home - sung from the heart, not jazzed up.

My favorite carol is Silent Night, specifically on an acoustic guitar. And my favorite non religious song is Happy Christmas (War is Over) by John Lennon.

I love "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" performed by Judy Garland in the film Meet Me in St Louis.

and 'O Holy Night' makes my spine tingle every time!

srmb60 12-08-2008 06:42 AM

Silver Bells is nice too. Somewhere I have a CD of Jim Reeves singing it. Lovely! And I'm not a country music fan either.

FrouFrou 12-08-2008 10:58 AM

I have too many favs. But...I absolutely love John Berry's O Holy Night...gets me every time. And Martina McBride's version too.

Silent night is my favourite

One of the hairdressing shops uptown has been playing holiday music outside for a couple of weeks now. It's growing on me ;) Ya know that one George Michael did ... it might be called Last Christmas .... this version sounds a bit like Darren from Savage Garden. I like it.

iriswhispers 12-08-2008 12:15 PM

O Holy Night

MissVitality 12-08-2008 12:33 PM

Susan, it is called 'Last Christmas' by Wham from the days before George went solo! I love it too!

cbmare 12-08-2008 12:54 PM

Walkin' Round in Womens Underwear.

I really like Ave Maria, especially the way Aaron Neville sings it.

O Holy Night as well.

But I really do like some of the spoofs sometimes.

By genre (and yes, I know it's more than one):

Carols/Jesus songs: O Holy Night, Joy to the World

Ye olde Englishe Yoolis: Here We Come a-Wassailing

Frolicking in the snow: Jingle Bells (HIJACK: seeing as it doesn't mention any specific holiday [it was in fact written with Thanksgiving in mind], does anybody who DOESN"T do Christmas ever sing it?)

Dirty slush: Fairytale of New York

Okay, here's my bizarre Christmas Carol choice:

Christmas for Cowboys by John Denver

I don't know if I can explain exactly why I love it so much. I think it's because it puts me in mind of a time/place when Christmas was less commercial. It's like reading the depictions of Christmas in the Little House on the Praire books.

tamaralynn 12-10-2008 07:20 PM

Feliz Navidad - I'm Canadian, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Funny enough, my favorite version is on Dora the Explorer - sung by Santa clause. hehe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaEQXYczgAI - I like the English version better... hehe

I also like Mary's Boy Child by Anne Murray :)

(my mil's name is Anne, fil's name is Murray.... easiest names to remember HA)

Smiling_Sara 12-11-2008 10:39 AM

I think my favorite Christmas song is "Mary did you know"

I also love one that I have ONLY heard in church. If anyone can find it on a CD or anything, I'd be one happy girl. I'm not even sure what it's called, but there is a line in the song that says...a baby came like a viloet in the snow.

sweet_talker 12-11-2008 01:37 PM

I really like crooner's versions of songs...Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra, ahhh. And I like the song "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree"

I googled. It's called Violet in the Snow and there is a youtube reference.

I also love love love Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas sung by Judy Garland....and Josh Groban does a version of O Holy Night that is fantastic! He hits such amazing notes...it honestly brings tears to my eyes

mayness 12-12-2008 02:06 PM

A few of my absolute favorites:

-"Last Christmas" by Wham!
-"Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses
-"I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" (but it has to be the original by that little girl with the annoying voice -- haha it's so great!)
-"I Only Want You for Christmas" by Allan Jackson
-"My Christmas Tree" by The Temptations

And sometimes I go back and listen to songs from Christmas plays that we did at my church when I was a teenager... I think we did just about every play ever written by Deborah Craig-Claar.

tamaralynn 12-12-2008 05:04 PM

I remember a while back watching Fresh Prince, and saw the one where Nikki gets baptized, and Will ended up getting Boyz II Men to sing for the ceremony. They sang "Silent Night".

Well when I was outside for my break at lunch, that same song was being played on the Speakers... gave me shivers (the good kind) :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc_2BiuyWQg gotta kinda wait for it

cbmare 12-12-2008 05:07 PM

John Tesh's Romantic Christmas isn't too bad.

FrouFrou 12-12-2008 10:26 PM

Love Mary Did You Know...that is such a beautiful song. Love Kenny Rogers w/Wynonna Judd & Kathy Mattea's version.

I made a CD of Christmas music and the ones I keep listening to over and over are Someday At Christmas by Stevie Wonder, Christmas Eve by Celine Dion, This Christmas & Christmas Time by Christina Aguilera...love 'em!
