I actually had someone suggest to me that the best place to shop for costumes is The Garden, a local porn store. Yikes.

I'm so glad you brought up this topic because it is something that has bothered me for a few years now. Did anyone see Mean Girls? Do you remember the part when she goes to the Halloween party dressed as a corpse bride, and all the other girls are dressed as playboy bunnies? That SO hit home for me.

The worst thing is, like Mandalinn said, I feel like I HAVE to dress slutty or I'll feel bad about myself and stick out like a sore thumb. I think it's a female competition thing. If I go dressed up as something extremely conservative, all of the OTHER women will be dressed in the slutty costumes and I'll feel bad about the way I look. On the other hand, if I dress in a slutty costume too, I'll be uncomfortable, cold, and constantly wondering if everybody can see where the sun don't shine.

Ugh. So this year I'm not dressing up. But next year maybe I'll make something. At least it'll be cheaper! (Those flimsy slutty costumes cost a lot of money!)

TBS and USA are part of the Standard Cable package. Yes, we are paying for them because we are paying for cable but they are not 'extra' like HBO or Showtime, etc. They are part of the Standard line up. I remember about 15 yrs ago some of these channels we part of the Basic cable package. Then they changed it up so that Basic cable is just that . . . and anything else you need Standard.

Am I the only one who doesnt have a prob with the slutty looking costumes?? My friend and I looked at a ton of them and commented on how cute some of them were. If they came in my size, then I would totally wear them. OR if I slimmed down enough, then ya..I'd wear it too.

My husband and I were in target and we were laughing at the skimpy costumes. The issue is that costumes USED to be smart in order to sell, now all they have to be is skimpy to sell.

I think, as Mandalinn said, it's not the existence of sexy costumes that is the problem, but the sheer dominance (perhaps not the right word here ) in the market. It's such a disturbing message to teens and young women, and such a sad and very clear comment on what the most appropriate role for women is considered to be. I think it's great to be confident in your sexuality and wear whatever you want. But a woman looking for a modest and smart costume shouldn't be a weird exception to the rule.

Maybe it's an eye-of-the-beholder thing but *I* don't think the candycorn costume looks all THAT slutty

Well, I went to buycostumes.com and some of the comments on the candy corn costume and the others like it said that the model must be really short because on them, the waist of the dress came right below the bust line and the skirt was MUCH shorter. At least it's not as obviously slutty as the other costumes, considering "the girls" appear to be well concealed... haha.

I went into a Halloween shop that the mall sets up every year, and I swear I felt like I had walked into a fetish shop. I saw nurses, french maids, prison wardens, police chicks, all with skirts just barely covering the inappropriate areas.

And the men's? One of them included a genie in a lamp, the spout of which stuck straight out from - well, I'll let you guess.

And it also said "rub me" on the side.

Well, I'm no prude, but if anyone wants an idea for an easy and cute costume to make:

Puppy

I used longjohns which I dyed light brown, sewed on dark brown felt patches in places for spots. I made a headband with two floppy ears out of the same dark brown felt and a tail, with a white tip, wore furry slippers and had one white and one brown mitten. I made up my face with a brown spot over one eye, "freckles" on my nose, wore a jeweled collar and carried a box of "People snacks" to the party. The best costume ever - that was a fun time.

The heck with paying money for what I've been seeing.

There is an abundance of sluttyness in halloween costumes but this is nothing new. I did my share of wearing the sexy devil costume, cat, etc...when I was younger but everything was covered proper.

I am SO glad that my children are adults now because I often cringe when walking by the kids department in Macy's and the like. I can't believe some of the every day outfits that are on the racks that are meant for children. Ugh!

I would love to see pics posted of everyone in their costumes!
