I have never grown lettuce but my mom use to when i was a kid. Wow it was great tasting. go for it!! My sunflowers are done..the heads are hanging and I was ready to cut them down but a neighbor said NO dont you have cardinals out there all day long eating on the seeds. I may cut the plants and lay the heads out.
I took my pansies out yesterday and replaced them with mums. My poor pansies didnt weather the heat and humidity well the past few weeks. I cant believe its going to be fall so soon. Maybe my mums will come back next year. I still have a few more pots to rework. I also am getting rid of most of my petunia baskets..they look really sad. I love the 3 I cut back..they are doing good. Next year I will make sure I cut them all back in early july.

Debbie - that's exactly what I do!

Tammy, we want to try a fall/winter garden too. We are in Virginia, so I think we could do lettuce through the fall, but I haven't tried it before. My mom does though. I'm thinking of broccoli and not sure what else.

I'm going to my dad's today to can tomatoes...my first time learning to can!

Anyone planted a garden this year, 2009?

I am doing my first ever veggie garden - tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, eggplant, and rhubarb. I am so excited!

Yes my hubby and I have a garden for the first time this year. We have been blanching and freezing turnip and mustard greens and also spinach. We are growing pole beans and zuchinni and cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, broccoli and cauliflour and even a little patch of corn. All seem to be doing ok so far except the little patch of corn. The greens we have had so far are delicious. :)

In my garden I have four tomato varieties (five plants, total...two of my favorite, green zebras), basil, bell peppers, jalapenos, lemon cucumber, butternut squash, yellow squash, several varieties of beans, edamame, tons of swiss chard, radishes, and several kinds of carrots. Then in herb pots I have rosemary, chive, and parsley. So lots going on!

Today I took in several tomatoes, a huge bunch of swiss chard, and some basil for dinner. I want to get another few successive plantings of beans in tonight (there are only a few things we can actually PLANT when it gets this hot). Tomatoes are producing like a dream (I have probably 30 on my early girl plant, and HUNDREDS of cherries...it outgrew the cage!)
