I love the Kentucky Derby... I've only seen it on TV, but have fond memories of sitting with my dad that first Saturday in May, I would pick a horse because of its 'name' or jockey colors... He was trying to educate me on track conditions etc.... I absolutely love to look at the hats.. OMG those women... what fun... I would love to go some year...
Anyone ever been ??
Taking the recipe from the Derby website:
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
Simple syrup (2 cups each sugar/water) - 1 Tbsp ~ 36 cals
(mint negligible)
Bourbon - (will depend on the alcohol %) ~ 133 for the 2oz
So, all in all, not a bad drink - 169 cals
(I personally would likely use less sugar syrup, but I like bourbon.)
I have never personally been, but a friend of mine goes every year. She says it is a sight to see. People from all walks of life are there, from the ladies with the fancy hats and the mint julips to regular old everyday joes in shorts and a t-shirt and a beer. While I am not into horse racing, I do think that it would be kinda fun to go one year. I only live around 4 hours away, so I could make a day or weekend out of it.
For the last 16 years or so, since my son was about 10, we have pick the horses for the Derby. Each taking a turn until ll are picked, then we add up the points at the end...no $$$ involved just for fun. The last several years my nephew has joined in. we made our picks last night...
ENJOY THE RACE TODAY!
Man that was a tough ending to a great race...so sad!
I had to turn it off EZ... I was so upset.... I'm so grateful she was euthanized within minutes... I think my days of enjoying these horse races are over... I was still getting over Barbaro....
For those reading this, you may not know what we are talking about...
At the Kentucky Derby this afternoon, one of the horses, a filly named Eight Belles, was running in second place, when she broke both ankles at the very end of the race, she was in too much pain to be splinted or taken anywhere... she was humanely euthanized on the track almost immediately... Heartbreaking...
