What to wear to Ballroom Dance Lessons?
We go for our first ballroom dance lesson this Tuesday at Arthur Murray. This was my only Christmas gift request. DH arranged a nice package of lessons for us. :carrot:
Has anyone taken lessons? What do you wear to ballroom dance lessons? I have some ballroom dancing type shoes, but I am clueless as to what kind of clothing to wear. |
Hiya! Congrats on going ballroom!! I take lessons, and I love it!
I recommend wearing supportive garments on your legs. I usually wear black opaque tights or nude colored support hose. For outer wear, it is usually something comfy--yoga pants or capris and a comfy top. I usually wear a sports bra to help support the girls too! Sometimes I will wear a skirt or dress--it really gives me that ballroom feel! LOL If I wear a skirt, I usually wear a pair of black bike shorts or Spanx under it for modesty's sake (in case I fall I don't want to flash my knickers! ;) ) The most important thing you will wear when ballroom dancing is your shoes. Make sure they are good quality, with felt soles for ease in turning. Your DH will want some too.....Here's where I got mine: http://www.appledanceshoes.com/ Have fun with it!! |
Thanks Jen,
My feet are problematic for fit. I wear between an E and EE for width and a size 9.5-10. I shopped around online at the ballroom dance shoe places and couldn't find any that would fit. I ended up ordering from Zappos.com a pair that is made like ballroom shoes-Ros Hommerson "Cha Cha". I don't know if the sole is going to work, but I'm going to try. If not, I read that a pair of socks can be worn during lessons. Thanks for the outer wear suggestions. I am going to head to the store and find a couple things that will work. |
I would wear something you are comfortable in. Honestly, until you know you like it, I wouldn't stress about the shoes. Socks will work. I doubt they'll let you wear shoes with a "street sole" on the dance floor though. It can ruin the floor.
If you enjoy it and get serious about it, then I'd order shoes or find a knowledgeable store that can special order for you. Dance shoes aren't meant to fit like regular shoes, so it's good to have someone in the know help you. |
Thanks Zenor...my shoes have not been worn outdoors, so they should be fine for the dance floor. And, if they don't work for ballroom, then I will wear them out as dress shoes. They have a softer sole, I just am not sure what it is made of.
We love to dance. We used to go dancing every Friday and Saturday night when we lived in KC. Hopefully we will enjoy ballroom as much as nightclub. We learned some swing dance moves through the years and would love to learn more. After ballroom, we plan to take country dancing lessons, then latin dance lessons. I see this as a fabulous way to exercise, socialize and just have fun. |
It is definitely lots of fun! Good luck!
