Disney's It's a Small World

Did you hear that Disneyland's ride, It's a Small World, is going to be closed for a year? It has to revamp the ride because when it was originally built in 1963, it was made for men weighing an average of 175 and women averaging 135. In today's time, those weights are no longer common. Here's a link to the report:

omg! I never thought of that being a problem! wow! That would be so embarassing being asked to leave a ride because of your size!

mandalinn82 10-30-2007 05:53 PM

Wow. That is incredible and kind of sad.

Same with airplanes - the total weight they use to calculate fuel consumption has been increased.

melekalikimaka 10-30-2007 06:09 PM

That IS sad :(. Still, the ride is 44 years old, it really needed at least a little bit of cosmetic work as well along with safety and structural improvements anyway. I'm glad I got to see it twice within the past 2 years in all it's original glory. Cheesetastic!

Very interesting. Thanks for posting this link.

That is sad. I've been on that ride at well over 175 lbs (well over).

The one I thought was tricky was the mattahorn ride. DH and I rode it together (I being 275 lbs, him 130 lbs) and we barely fit together. If he wasn't so skinny, it would've never worked.

aww I read the title and remembered the song!!

This is my fav. version of the song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5QHfoX_H4c

This chick is a really amazing singer.

EZMONEY 10-30-2007 10:24 PM

If I remember right...and I usually don't...I thought they were going to close that ride down because no one wanted to ride it. Maybe it's because they didn't fit?

EZMONEY 10-30-2007 10:26 PM

opps...Loved the link LOINTHECITY

melekalikimaka 10-30-2007 10:43 PM

yes, quite an amazing singer BUT sounds like the typical Disney/broadway musical fare......not that that's a bad thing, it's just, well... not my first choice in music appreciation. ;)

phantastica 10-30-2007 10:48 PM

WOW! That's an amazing version of the song.

On the ride .... it would totally suck to bottom out!

bargoo 10-30-2007 10:54 PM

I don't dare listen to the song . I won't be able to get it out of my head for weeks.

lointhecity 10-31-2007 12:12 PM

well, yeah, it's been known to happen, its a catchy tune. But a beautiful one. :)

MiaRocks 03-22-2009 07:22 PM

I love Disney!

EZMONEY 03-22-2009 08:35 PM

I think it re-opened

stacylambert 03-23-2009 02:58 AM

We're Disney passport members, and yes it has re-opened. It was closed at the time we joined in August, but reopened during their holiday celebration.

I had no idea that was why though. I just assumed they were doing repairs/refurbishment.

mrsaugie 03-23-2009 09:21 AM

i believe it look at how the averages in weight have changed even in the last 10 years let alone 40 years.

FrouFrou 03-23-2009 10:45 AM

That is one ride that need to be shut down forever, lol!

stellarwbz 03-23-2009 12:26 PM

I don't really like the Americana scene they added in. I liked how it was before. I too have a season pass, I've been on it about 4 times since the changes. The second time we went on it one of the doll's head fell off! They had to shut down the ride to fix it. Lol.

lauralyn 03-24-2009 06:28 AM

their passengers slowly going mad from listening to the ride’s theme song.

This line in the article made me laugh, I can see it happening.

mayness 03-24-2009 07:41 AM

To be fair, according to the last paragraph in the article, Disney denied that it had anything to do with weight. This is just something a reporter cooked up to bring some drama to their web site. :)
