Went into the store looking for a jacket for work, had to go all the way in the back of the store. Then we couldn't find any new fashionable clothes because they were only in small sizes. And why do the plus sizes always have to be next the maternity sizes? What's up with that? Walked out without buying anything!! I feel better saying this.

LOL, I'm with you, girl! It's like they're as ashamed of the clothes as they want overweight people to be of themselves.

But considering how ugly some of the plus-sized clothes are in certain stores it's probably a blessing that they put them where no one sees them.

petites are back there too - crammed in to a tiny little corner, I think "maternity" is the holy dividing ground between plus and petite sections so we dont accidently end up in the wrong section.


And god help you if you are petite AND plus sized. Because nothing helps a short fat woman look good like "cuffing" the 8 extra inches of material at the bottom of the pants.

If you are not "normal" then you gotta go to the back of the store. (who is normal by the way?)

I always wondered this too. I hate it! When I go to Old Navy (the only place I'll buy clothes at, because I know they have the Plus size clothes that will fit me), it's almost like a walk of shame when walking to the back of the store to the tiny corner of Plus sized clothes.

You know I never thought of it like that....but you know you are so right!

They have them in the back for the same reason they post the petite models on the front of magazines. So many in the USA are overweight, so I can't see why it would make any difference in appealing to shoppers, but either it does, or they think it will. They're going for eye appeal. They put the fashionable, appealing, thinner clothing up front, and the thinner model on the cover.

Why they don't try to make more fashionable plus sized clothing though I can't understand. The only thing I can think of is that they figure that plus sized women are insecure and probably won't wear anything that they think will show their waist or is supposed to be sexy. I guess they figure we'd WANT to dress frumpy to hide our weight. And sadly, for the most part, they ARE right there. I know that's exactly how I dressed. I wouldn't get anything that was tapered at the waist or that I thought was meant for someone younger. Now I'm 42 and don't mind wearing a younger set of clothes, but only because I'm now proud of the body I have.

You can GET more fashionable stuff in plus BTW, but you have to pay a good price for it.

When I was pregnant, the maternity section at Target was part of the underwear and pajamas department. As if all we did all day was lie around and sleep (well, I would have LIKED to sleep more, but I had a job!).

Well it is all about merchandising, Jr and couture are what are the "in style" are about and it is what draws people into the stores. even in the "regular" department larger sizes are always to the back of the rack, because smaller sizes are visually more apealing to the consumer.

As for plus being next to maternity it is becuse some of the items use to be interchangable. Many older women will wear materity pants because they will accomodate a large belly and smaller leg where plus is fuller all the way through.
when I was pregnant I wore a lot of plus size cloths becuse the looked better!
