those pesky little fruit flys? I don't know if this is the real name, but it's what I know them as. They are all over my kitchen. I have sprayed with no success. Any help would be appreciated. I know it's not a weight loss question, but had to ask. Thanks.

Anyway...

Get rid of all standing water anywhere in your kitchen. Compost bowl? Get rid of it. Any food waste (especially fruit and veggie waste!) needs to not be in your kitchen. The important thing is to keep everything as dry as possible.

Now. Get a jar and a fresh banana peel (you don't even have to use the whole thing). Put the banana peel in the jar and cover with saran wrap. Secure with a rubber band. Poke 3 or 4 *small* holes in the top- just large enough for the little buggers to get in. They will start to collect in there after a bit. Empty outside when it starts to get crowded. The logic is that they flies can get in the jar, but can't get out. We had a HUGE fruitfly problem over the summer and a few days of doing that (and a bleach bomb here and there) did the trick. Good luck!

I've also heard about putting a dish of water out and they'll drown in the water. Can't remember if you should or shouldn't add dish soap?

My roommates over the summer were really environmentally strict and tried variations of this. I can tell you this only contributed to the problem

I have also heard that you can leave out a glass of wine for the same effect. Haven't tried it, though.

The thing that really works for me is the old-fashioned vinegar jar routine -- works like a charm.

I use old food jars (well washed, of course). Put about a tablespoon of vinegar in the bottom; add about 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent; fill the jar about 1/4 full with water and shake to make bubbles. Punch a few holes in the lid of the jar and put it on.

The fruit-flies get in through the holes (they love vinegar, for some reason) and then get caught in the soap bubbles if they don't drown first. Shake it a little once in awhile to refresh the bubbles.

When you've got a lot of dead ones, you can just dump the whole thing down the drain, rinse the jar, and start again.

I have used these ecologically appropriate traps, and they are incredibly effective.

We had them too and had the Orkin guy a few weeks ago out for the spiders and I just realized I haven't seen any since, lol. Well worth the money.
