Metamucil encouraging ED?

  • I saw the ads and they struck me as not a good thing. A local columnist expressed it better than i could

  • That seems like a bad message to send to our youth of this world.
No wonder the kids are confused.
  • I thought I saw a brand of fiber supplement that actually says that it's for weight loss on the container?! I haven't seen the commercials in question but don't need to in order to know that the message they are sending is very twisted indeed. No wonder more people have EDs than before.

  • You know.... I was thinking Erectile Dysfunction when I read the title.

I have no idea why, considering this is a DIETING message board!!!

Anyway - I agree the ad is a bad idea.
  • hah. glad i'm not the only one who didn't realize there was more than one thing that ED could stand for...

so was i, and i was so confused! i'm glad i wasn't the only one, lol.

  • metamucil causing erectile dysfunction
  • Add me to the erectile dysfunction mind set, too! I thought, "Wow! Those guys really DO have challenges being males!" (Glad I'm female!)
  • ya think it's our age that makes ED stand for Erectile Dysfunction vs Eating disorder.

I take metamucil several times a day... trust me I don't have an eating disorder and I'm not quite a senior citizen....

I come from a family full of eating disorders and laxitive abusers.... i'm not sure i see it the same way you guys do....
  • I'm actually with Nessa. I take psyllium husk powder and DH takes metamucil occassionally (which has main ingredient of psyllium husk powder). My morning drink has a bit of psyllium husk powder in it and sometimes I'll take a little extra if I think I need fiber. DH takes metamucil almost every night.

I think they are just trying to expand their audience. Everyone needs fiber and few people get enough of it.
  • I'm not arguing the health benefit of fiber, or saying that fiber makes you ED. BUT given that many ED are known to abuse laxatives, is labeling a laxative as a beauty aid with supermodel bodies implying its benefit as a weigtloss aid as well?

Its like alcohol, you can use alcohol without being an alcoholic, and there are even health benefits from it. But we would probably frown at an alcohol ad that said "drink your troubles away"
  • yes but FIBER is necessary for HEALTH and rarely does anyone get enough fiber and I gotta tell you as someone who takes Metamucil for the laxative effect, it's not that great. TRUST me, if someone was going to be a laxative abuser due to ED Metamucil is not their choice....

Many eating disordered people are known to abuse apples ("all I ate today!") as well. That's not the fault of the apple growers.
  • I teach, so I thought ED meant 'emotionally disturbed,' which is a special ed label. That would be a new one!
