What herbs/spices do you absolutely hate?
I abhor rosemary. It stinks and tastes like soap. It permeates anything it is in and makes it inedible for me. I tried flashing the disgusting stuff in a bit of olive oil to get rid of the soapy taste. However the stench was still there. I guess you can tell that I REALLY don't like it.
I'm not a big fan of cardamon either. It's a bit strong for me. I do like a bit of saffron from time to time. However, unless you get the threads or pay an arm and a leg, you are probably paying for tumeric. |
I love rosemary! But I hate cilantro. Ick. Its another "permeates everything" sort of herb.
|
Fennel, anise.
|
OREGANO!! BLEH!!
|
Cilantro for me, too!
Also, not a fan of ginger. |
For some reason, Thyme and me don't click. I also don't care for Parsley but I love Cilantro.
|
Fennel, & curry does not agree with me
|
I absolutely can not stand cilantro in anything except salsa where it belongs, and even then, not too much.
I do not like cloves in my ham or anywhere else. Yuck! I love rosemary on a roast :T |
I think anything used to excess is icky.
I had a friend who brought in bunches of fresh cilantro to work once and I thought I'd gag from the smell. It took a long time before I'd taste it, but I do like it, especially in salsa. I have a couple recipes that call for fennel and rosemary and I had to go and buy those because I didn't have any on hand. I wonder if that means they are something that I didn't like in the past? I don't remember. I like cardamom in a Swedish Christmas bread that my Mom makes--oh, so yummy and if you forget the cardamom, the taste just isn't right. Ginger (fresh) actually turns my stomach if there is too much of it in the dish. |
Anise. Hate, hate anise.
Not too fond of sage. Adore cilantro but it makes my throat close up and I wheeze. I guess that's not a good thing, so I avoid it. |
Another anise, fennel HATER here. Also curry.
|
I don't like rosemary either... or fennel.
I can only take ginger in TEENSY amounts. :) |
I can't stand cumin. Even the tiniest speck ruins a dish for me. I also hate fresh parsley, though I don't mind dried.
|
I grow lots of herbs and just love all of them. Too much of anything is hard to take though!
|
Wow, Anise is really unpopular. I hate it as well.
Also, shallots and anything else in the onion family. Yuck. |
Anise and fennel here too. (black licorice taste - YUCK)
|
Guess you gals would hate my cooking!
|
I'm with you all on the anise, fennel, anything licorice tasting. Bleck!! A lot!
I also find cilantro disgusting, can't stand it at all. don't like curry or saffron either. Wow I'm a picky girl. |

Anise, ginger and cloves. Ive never had curry or saffron.
|
Another anise here. Anything licorice-like to me is just gross. But fennel, when roasted, doesn't taste as licorice-y to me, so thats ok.
|
ew i forgot i hate ginger too.
|
Gary: I love pizza, but it gets RUINED with too much OREGANO way too often...BLEH!! I put it in things to give it color and it always ruins my cooking, so now I use parsley for color. You know, like on buttery noodles and such. Otherwise it's like the dark side of pizza...not the burnt crust....the 'dark side'...
I also LOVE rosemary and thyme...but only fresh from my garden. |
Bay Leaves. Might as well add an old sweaty sock to your food!

Curry that you get in powder form in America that says "Curry" on the jar, is just a mixture of spices like turmeric and coriander. A lot of americans hear "curry" when referring to a dish and instantly think of the powder in a jar - but "curry" everywhere else just means a mix of spices that season a dish, not necessarily the ones in the american curry jar. I have curry powder in my spice cabinet but rarely use it, although I do like it.
My #1 spice on the all-time-hate list is cilantro. I agree that cilantro and rosemary permeate food and make it taste like soap. I'm a bit more used to rosemary than cilantro, though. You should see me when I eat salsa - eating around the bigger green leaves so I don't get a mouthful of that junk. Bleh! |
I'm with all you cilantro haters. The smell of it makes me nauseaous and if you've ever had a Vietnamese Sub, there's tons on them usually. Beware!!!
