I bought what I think was a kilogram (!) of psyllium husks from a health food store and I wish I could give some away. It was the best deal for the price but, considering how much I use at a time, I think it may go bad before I can use even a fraction of it.
I've tried it in smoothies and it's fine. I like the oatmeal idea but I guess now what I'm wondering is, does anyone have any other ways to eat it. I absolutely need more fibre in my diet and I don't have a smoothie every day so I'd love some other suggestions and/or recipes?? I have no idea how to work it into a recipe but some sort of muffin with protein and fibre would be the best breakfast for me. And hey, anyone want some psyllium? ;) |
I've been wondering if psyllium husks and wholeground flaxseed meal are interchangeable. I have flaxseed meal at home and it is cheaper to purchase than psyllium. Both add fiber to your diet and can be mixed into foods.
Here are the nutritional facts from the back of the bag I'm using: Serving size: 2 TBSP Calories: 60 Total Fat: 4.5g (7%) Saturated Fat: 0g Trans Fat: 0g Cholesterol: 0g Sodium: 0g Total Carbohydrate: 4g (1%) Dietary Fiber: 4g (15%) Sugars: 0g Protein: 3g Vitamin A: 0% Vitamin C: 0% Calcium: 2% Iron: 4% Hmmm...now that I compare the 2, the calories are much higher in Flaxseed meal, though it has more protein. |
Elisa -- If you know you will use it for sure, keep the large portion in an airtight container in the freezer it will keep almost forever... I use it in my oatmeal, I just added some to my protein pancakes... before bed I just add it to water and gulp it down then drink more water because it expands pretty quickly and can cause cramps... I use a tablespoon in the morning and at night... If I'm hungry before bed, the fibreness (is that a word?) will fill me up right away, and there's barely any calories in it, this is what I like about it amongst all the other benefits of psyllium...

Thanks Ilene! I split it up and put it in airtight bags. The package said that it would last (not refrigerated or frozen) until April 2009! But I still was looking for ideas. I absolutely need more fibre in my diet and I do love the fibre with no calories. I'm not sure if I could just drink it with water but maybe I'll try. My husband is always looking for ways to "fill up" before or after a meal and I think he might go for it too. I guess I can really sprinkle it on anything.
