Default The Bargain Hunters Body for Life

I'm a bit on the frugal side and we're not rich. Mostly, I don't want something I'm doing for me to bankrupt my family.
I'm hoping others will pop in with frugal suggestions as well. I'm always very very sorry that the cost of weight loss seems prohibitive to some.

So here I go ...

I already had
oatmeal-cheap
protein powder-$5 or 6 per pound at a bulk food store
egg whites- $2 and change for 16 eggs worth

... I made that into 6 protein pancakes

steel cut oats-cheap like oatmeal. in the crock pot for maybe 5 servings
tuna- 50 cents a can or about 79 cents. I eat the whole can
blueberries frozen-I don't remember. I bought a big pail and froze them in baggies
canned peaches and pineapple-$1 each makes two servings
chicken thighs-$1 a lb

So today I bought ...
ww crackers-$3.69 worth made 21 servings and a bowl left over for my fella's
cottage cheese-$5.38 for 2 lbs makes 8 servings
mixed greens-$3.68 for maybe 6 huge servings
fresh turkey breast- 3 meals for all three of us $15.00 (ouch)
haddock loins-$7 for two meals for all of us
brown rice-$1.59 a lb. we'll all eat that too

During the week I'll have to get more salad greens. And I'll have to add potatos, breads and such for my working men. I'll keep an eye out for poultry, fish and cottage cheese on sale.

I eat porridge and weatbix both cheap and tasty. Tuna isn't bad for price and I get fish when I can , boy fish is so expensive that I only buy the fresh stuff for me and frozen stuff for the boys
. I now keep a big tray of apples banana's and whatever fruit is on sale.
I try to stay away from bread as it likes to stay to long and I usually buy frozen vegies so they don't go off until they are all gone.
I only buy the cheap meat for the boys, I don't eat meat myself.

what is steel cut oats ? and do you get your protien powder from a bin place ?
I'm looking into some protien powder from the gym , it's $20 for about 10 servings .
I can't afford to have all those egg whites, eggs are also expensive .
The frozen berries are also expensive but I will try to get them as they make great smoothies.

Oh yes, the protein is from a bin place. Here we call them bulk food stores
If you're in a bin place, have a look at textured vegetable protein. You can do anything with it that you would normally do with ground beef but ... no fat ... and I think it's cheap.
Same with steel cut oats ... I really like my bin place! ... oats, just cut different. Take a long time to cook but they taste better and stick to your ribs.

thanks SusanB.
what do you do with vegtable protien ? how do you use it in cooking ?
I'm so used to making meat and three veg in the old days and processed food in the past few years that my cooking skills have gone to put .

I put it in chili, soup ... stuff like that. It pretty much takes on the taste of whatever it's in.

But as far as BFL goes meat and 3 vegetables is perfect! I can't always afford the best cuts either so ... I eat tuna, cottage cheese ... and I bargain hunt!

My Bulk Barn does not have protein powder.

They do have TVP, but I don't really use ground meat all that often to begin with.

Ah, we don't have the Country Bulk here. After I saw your post, I hunted all up & down the Bulk Barn for it, just hoping that I'd somehow overlooked it previously. . .but no.

I've looked in a couple of Bulk Barns and no dice. It wasn't there. If the weather improves, you'll have to slip to Stratford

I use regular eggs, keep the white and throw the yolk away - 18 egg whites are only 99 cents that way and have no added chemicals.

Eggs are expensive here. I got some on sale today for 2.19 a dozen. I miss my chickens.
