Made some homemade croutons the other day

And I swear I'll never buy store-bought again.

I cut old bread up into small cubes and dumped them in a large bowl. Then I spritzed and coated them with fat-free butter spray. After that I tossed them up with garlic powder, basil and tarragon. Then I spread them on a large cookie sheet and stuck them in a 300 oven for about 10-15 minutes until they were crunchy.

I've heard the best way to keep homemade croutons is in an airtight container in the refrigerator. So they've been in there for almost 3 days and I took a taste of them this afternoon and they're still crunchy!

Can't wait to have them on a salad. Much better than store-bought and it's a great way to use up old bread instead of pitching it out.

Just thought I'd share :)

do you know how many calories just a question??

LLV 07-19-2006 08:26 PM

No, not exactly. I supposed it would be the amount of calories in just the bread, however many you eat. Since I used fat-free butter spray instead of oil, it adds a trivial amount. All of the recipes I found for homemade croutons called for using some type of oil, mostly olive. I'm an oil-paranoid freak, I don't go anywhere near the stuff unless I have to. Good oils, bad oils, whatever... they all have the same amount of calories.

So I improvised and shunned the oil and used the ff butter spray instead. Just enough to coat, not saturate. So probably the only calories in these will come from the bread itself :)
