Olive oil or butter on a baked potato?

Olive oil tastes every bit as good as butter on a baked potato without all that saturated fat.

I'd use neither, since I'm trying to keep my calories down.

I'd use I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray for 0 calories or even Smart Balance Light Buttery Spread for 45 cal. per tb. vs. the 120 for the olive oil.
But if you love olive oil, go for it! I just gotta watch those calories!

I've got a different diet...

Hi Joycelyn,

I am on a muscle building diet so the olive oil is preferable to help build muscle mass and help alleviate saturated fat from my system since I also eat lean sirloin for the creatine and amino acids. It helps to build the muscle directly after workout.

The fat in olive oil is both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Both are readily used as fuel for your body for exercize. Also, monounsaturated fat can be easily eliminated from the body by the liver but saturated fat cannot and monounsaturated will cling to saturated and help transport it for elimination by the liver. The liver more readily processes this fat combination.

I've already lost my body fat and now I am concentrating on building muscle for greater health and support for my back. It helps with my job and I need the added protection, ...let alone, ...it doesn't look bad either!

That's great -- I bet that does taste good.

When I do want a butter taste, I use the Fleishman's margarine made from olive oil with no trans fats.

Also, you have to be REALLY careful with the "no calorie" margarine sprays. Read the label and the ingredients carefully. Companies are allowed to say a product has 0 calories if a serving (however they define a serving) has 5 calories or less. An entire bottle of that spray has about 700 calories, so just use it sparingly.

Hi Grrl,

Good point! I'd heard that before but it was a while ago and I don't use the sprays anyway.

Btw, ...they have designer olive oils with thyme, sage, peppers, ...etc., for different flavor changes.

About the sprays, a spray bottle for oil is like $10-20 and you can add any oil you want. The bottles make it really easy to control how much you add. I have started using a light spray of oil instead of butter. I have heard that olive oil is actually a really good fat for you and one of the bext oils to have if you are going to have fat. I should try and find an article but its hard to find good articles ont he web cause there is so much junk.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the heads up on spray bottles. Here's a link that might help on olive oil.

I also would suggest Brumblenbrown-they make yogurt butter. Very low in cals and fat and no trans fats. I use light butter otherwise (if I need to for cooking) and olive oil for everything else.

thanks for the tip i love olive oil.

I use Butter Buds for flavor, and maybe a little light sour cream for moisture.

Hi Ilene,

Udo's looks real interesting, ...thanks!

Hi Love,

Are you sure about the spelling of that products name? I can't find any reference on a search engine.

sorry bout that!

I spelled it wrong:(

It's spelled Brummel and Brown

(FYI-the fruit ones are nice, but a little too sweet for my taste) Enjoy!
