Gross
Does anyone else have a problem with kale containing tons of little garden insects (most likely aphids) I'm not just talking about home grown kale. I just bought some at the store the other day, and when I went to wash it, I noticed it contained so many of them...
I'm sure they wouldn't do you any harm, and washing gets some of them off, but....ew :( I was reading articles the other day about how there are bug parts in common foods we eat. :p I think I've lost my appetite. |
I'll take the low-fat protein. Thanks. And yum.
I used to eat honey cappings - which had bits of bee in them. The only thing I do not want are parasites that could grow in me...like tapeworms. Good for weightloss apparently nevertheless.... |
Kale is tricky because the leaves are folded and have little grooves in them. I suggest soaking the leaves for a few minutes with a natural vegetable cleaner when you get home and then rinse. It might help you avoid seeing a bunch of them!
Little bugs are gross but try to not over think it :) the foods are really there to nourish you and the bugs just seem to share that mindset ;) |
We soak produce in the sink, in salted cold water. Seems to make most of the critters let go. Our last batch of kale from the garden ... :barf: was host to quite a nice population. Broccoli gets a LONG soak. Under a plate, too! I've had my share of "indigenous protein". :p

A soak in a water/vinegar mix should work, too.
I only have that "issue" with plants in general when i buy them from farmer's markets rather than the grocery store, but I think it's worth dealing with for fresher produce. Usually... It is pretty gnarly though. |
