Good food on a tight budget?

Any penny-pinchers out there with suggestions of low priced, low carb foods?

I'm stocking my new apartment with essentials but for food all I have is sandwich stuff and cereal... I'm trying my best to avoid the stereotypical college foods like ramen noodles for obvious reasons; but I'm hungry and need to go grocery shopping!

Suggestions please!:D

Produce. If you have a Bountiful Baskets CSA, in your area, that's a great deal!!

I find whole foods to be a better deal than processed junk. You pay more for convenience, than you realize!

Do you have 99 cent stores in your area? I am in So Cal. Many have fantastic produce sections. Giant heads of cauliflower for example or 4 packs of romaine hearts for $1. Also in the canned section - beans. If your freezer is adequate then look for on sale lean meats/chicken/fish and freeze in the size portions you want. The further you stay away from pre-packaged the better your wallet will feel, and your body as well :)
