Default shocking waste of 500 calories a day!

They just re-showed an Oprah/Dr Oz episode today where they were talking about American children "suck down 500 calories a day" with what they drink. I gave up all drinks except water and the occassional crystal lite in May after being a life long soda addict. Between drinks and adding more exercise I have lost 18lbs. Those drinks are killing us!!!

I know this is probably bad, it's none of my business what others eat or drink...but I always cringe when I see an overweight person slurping down regular sodas and drinks. I just think how much healthier and how many pounds less they could weigh by just skipping the drinks!

Soda's not my problem. I love beer and having a few drinks. I've cut way back, but it makes me a sad panda.

i am finding since i gave up soda for reasons other than weight loss in the begining that i am starting to judge my family members. i started a journal to write about it thinking my judgement is really more about me than it is them. i also don't know how i got to this weight... hoping talking about it and writing about it will set me free.

Oh my goodness, I LOVE soda. I haven't had any since April of this year. I used to love to drink Coke Zero. I was having about 5 a week. All I drink is water now and my nightly 1 cup of crystal lite lemonade.
When I was younger, I used to suck down Sunkist like nobody's buisness. Hawaiin Punch was a favorite too. I got to a point back in 2007 where I was drinking REAL 100% red can Coca Cola's. Sometimes I would drink 4 a day of real coke's. It's no wonder I got up to 335 pounds. Soon as I started drinking those coke's I really put on the weight. I haven't had a real coke since 2009. I love a good ice coke right out of the cold fridge coke, but I just can't have them. It's for the best and for my health. Giving soda's up and changing everything about the way I eat has helped me get to where I am today. One pound away from 100 pounds lost. =)

A lot of adults drink at LEAST 500 calories in one sitting - your morning coffee/latte/etc. A small flavored latte made with skim milk from Starbucks is between 150 - 200 calories without whip cream. Most adults I know order a large, or at VERY least a medium, with the whip cream!

When I think about all the drinks I used to enjoy most, they are all things with a lot of calories... even 100% juice has a ton!

drinking calories are the worst!! Cutting soda and other high calorie sips was definitely one of the first changes I made that really helped me start to drop the pounds. It's really amazing how they can add up...

I was 16 when I cut out drinking sodas and juices. I still gained my way up to 330 pounds.

Still, I sometimes wonder if I would've gained even MORE if I had been drinking my calories in sodas, juices, etc.

I think it's just one other thing to be conscious of. Not that a person can't choose to drink their calories, but it's a step in the right direction for it to be a conscious choice.

Good topic, I noticed this the other day. Someone went to CVS to get drinks and they got me one of those canned Starbucks drinks. 200 calories in that thing alone.

The only beverage besides water that I indulge in is coffee. Lots and lots and LOTS of coffee!

Up until June of this year, I was also guilty of being a sugar-drink addict. I had at least one 20 oz bottle of Pepsi daily at work, and one 12 oz can when I'd get home in the evening. Now, I realize that one bottle had more than my daily allotment of sugar and 350 calories!! Plus the can added another 44 g of sugar and 150 calories. In total, I was drinking 500+ calories per day. How crazy.

I don't really like the taste of diet drinks, so I've mostly passed on any type of pop/soda since June. I had a Pepsi Max over the weekend which I found to be acceptable, but it likely won't become a habit.

I'm ALL about some crystal light!! Another current favorite is Raspberry Cranergy, which only has 35 calories and 8g of sugar per serving. It doesn't taste like a diet drink at all, which I love. I add some water to it to stretch it out some and it's working great for me. I'm also a coffee girl, which is now my morning drink of choice rather than the Pepsi.

It's amazing how much weight you can lose just from just altering your drink intake!! The first week I stopped drinking the pop/sodas, I lost 6 lbs!

i used to drink a lot of milk (2%) and gatorade... but once i began logging my calories i quickly got real stingy and didn't want to waste any precious calories by drinking them. seeing my daily calorie count getting sucked down with liquids... it was a pretty easy decision to give them up.

luckily i've always been a water drinker... and now it is pretty much exclusively all i drink.

My calorie vacuum is alcohol, too. My guy and I got attached to Mikes HardER lemonades....til I looked up the calorie count--over 400 calories in each can. Aagghh!

As someone who never drank soda except on very rare occasions...I actually get a little jealous of folks who used to suck them down like water, then give it up and lose significant amounts of weight. I don't have any one thing that can easily cut out of my diet that would make such a huge impact.

(I don't mean to imply that resisting the urge/habit of drinking soda is easy, just that the decision, once made, is not tricky to employ.)

I used to have no idea how many calories were in alcohol. It SHOCKED me.

I drink a bunch of my calories in alcohol form too. But, I say they're not empty like soda and juice calories! They are calories that contribute to relaxation and general bonhomie.
