Greek Yogurt

Ok, so after reading all this hoopla about how good Greek Yogurt is for us... and talking to my trainer friend who also works at GNC (basically, the guy knows TONS about health, healthy foods, working out, etc) - I decided to give Greek Yogurt a try as my new go-to snack. I forget the brand, but I picked some up from the grocery store. It was disgusting! This was a few months ago. A few days ago, I am at Food Lion & I stroll down the dairy section and see CHOBANI Non-Fat Greek Yogurt (different brand)... Picked up two (Lemon & Honey). HOLY ----. Delicious. 150 cal. All natural, no preservatives. Full of probiotics & calcium. Moral of the story - anyone out there looking for a good, healthy snack, I'd suggest trying this stuff. They have many flavors. Tasted great, good for ya (better than regular yogurt), and left me feeling full!

luckymommy 06-24-2011 04:35 PM

I'm so glad you like it! I like it too, but I've never tried Chobani brand. I like the Fage brand and they even have it at Costco! :)

VermontMom 06-24-2011 04:36 PM

Yes to Chobani!! so delicious, thick and satisfying. :carrot:

abetterme 06-24-2011 04:44 PM

I like Chobani and Dannon Greek yogurt. I don't really care for yoplait.

Beck 06-24-2011 05:08 PM

I love Chobani! Trader Joe's greek yogurt is also very good, especially the mixed berry; it's as good as dessert.

mkroyer 06-24-2011 05:14 PM

Fage all the WAY... its the thickest and creamiest.. and ive tried them ALLL

QuilterInVA 06-24-2011 05:21 PM

Dannon and Yoplait have additives in their Greek yogurt that the real stuff doesn't. I don't like them at all. I love Trader Joe's. My breakfast is often Greek yogurt, seasonal fruit, and 1/2 oz. chopped nuts.

CorinneIrene 06-24-2011 06:35 PM

YES! Chobani is my go to! Love it- especially pineapple! The company isn't too far from here and they have trouble keeping it in stock in stores. They're actually considering purchasing an abandoned factory here in my town to expand their operations. Mm, I wouldn't mind working there!

chickadee32 06-25-2011 04:54 PM

I've always really disliked regular yogurt, but I was a yogurt convert the minute I tried greek yogurt. I love Fage (especially) and Chobani. I have both in the fridge and I'm not even hungry, but I want some now after reading this thread! Maybe a treat for later. :) I haven't given the TJs greek yogurt a try yet, but I'll have to pick some up soon.

JenMusic 06-25-2011 10:17 PM

I agree, the brand DOES matter with Greek yogurt. I love Trader Joe's - especially their 2% - but have been convinced that organic dairy is much better and healthier than conventional dairy, so I've switched over to Oikos (Stoneyfield's Greek yogurt). It's more expensive, but still tasty and thick and yummy!

sumire 06-26-2011 11:34 AM

For plain Greek yogurt, which I eat with fruit, I like Fage the best, 2% better than 0% when I have the calories available. But Trader Joe's Greek yogurt is much less expensive where I live, and it's "good enough" in my book, so that's what I typically eat. I don't like Chobani's plain Greek yogurt, but the flavored ones are good.

I also like Siggi's Skyr (really expensive, so it's an occasional treat). It's thick like Greek yogurt and even more tart. I believe it's produced around NYC, but has spread out to Whole Foods in other places in the US.

The new Fage 0% flavors are amazing...the Mango Guanabana is my favorite!

nikkinouille 06-26-2011 03:43 PM

I personally don't like Oikos. I did pick up two Fage ones today. One mango guanabana and one cherry Pomegranate. We don't have trader joes where I live but we have Harris Teeter. Might see what they carry next time I'm there.

I make my own greek yogurt - I take the brand of plain, fat free yogurt that I always use (Mountain High but I'm not sure if that is a local or national brand) and then strain it in a big colander lined with a few flattened out coffee filters. You can strain it anywhere from 12 to 48 hours, depending on how thick you want it. I haven't gone beyond 24 since that is very thick and creamy but still yogurt. I think if you keep going after that, it gets more like cream cheese.

The volume goes down a huge amount, but it's still a lot less expensive than Fage and some of the others, and tastes as good to me.

3FCer344892 06-26-2011 08:22 PM

Mmmm. I LOVE Fage 0%. It's the only kind I've tried, because I can't get enough of it. I LOVE mixing a cup of frozen blueberries (thaw them in the microwave for a minute first) into it. It's creamy, sweet, a little sour, and delicious. I want to try Chobani, but the Kroger here doesn't sell it.

mayness 06-27-2011 08:55 AM

I have to agree, there's lots of really awful greek yogurt and lots of amazingly awesome greek yogurt. I actually haven't tried one in between... but I've stopped trying and just buy the Fage every time. :)

Bac0s 06-28-2011 08:45 PM

I love Chobani, but Fage will do in a pinch. Yoplait is revolting.

saef 06-29-2011 05:04 PM

I cannot believe the explosive proliferation of Greek yogurt brands at the grocery stores that I frequent.

About two or three years ago, it was hard to find. Then, there was a sonic boom of marketing, and now it's everywhere, all the major dairy brands carry their own version, and now there are many friends of mine who won't eat any yogurt that isn't Greek style.

The biggest brands don't seem to do it as well as the smaller niche marketers.

I will be shocked if some conglomerate food corp. doesn't buy out Fage for a large sum. If they do, I hope they don't mess with it.

Yoplait is particularly ... sour. And I actually **like** sour & could probably eat sour cream if yogurt weren't available. Also the shape of the cup makes it look as though you get less for your money. They need to rethink this product.

Dannon, Brown Cow, Athenos and Oikos are about on par, to me anyway. Brown Cow is disappearing from the dairy cases: A failed launch? I just bought six tubs of Athenos for 75% off, so that's not catching on very quickly here either.

Chobani is really good, a little better than the previous group. The constant sales on it make me buy it a lot more than those others.

Siggi's is the only thing that approaches Fage.

Yoplait needs to dump its house brand & buy Fage & not touch it.

We have a lot of multiple-buying yogurt hoarders here. If Fage is on sale, the shelf gets cleaned out fast. Particularly for the 0% plain. If I don't get to the store early after the restocking, it's always gone. I am sick of waiting for rain checks at the service desk.

Darkblue 06-30-2011 09:33 PM

We can even get Fage where I live. Fage 2% with fruit is awesome. I love how thick it is.

nikkinouille 07-01-2011 12:16 PM

Mmmm... I just froze a 6oz of Greek Yogurt & ate it. Tastes like ice cream. Except so much better for you ;) Any one else freeze theirs from time to time?

saef 07-01-2011 01:10 PM

Two more brands in the dairy case in my grocery store this morning:

Cabot now has a Greek yogurt. I looked at the big 32. oz tub, but it's 10% milkfat.

Also, Olympus, which I didn't see in plain nonfat.

I've also seen one called Greek Gods, but only in smaller health food stores.

And Chobani is making money hand-over-fist with theirs, according to the Wall Street Journal.

I am just wondering, reading your accounts of how great it is. Could some one elborate on the taste a bit? I'm really not a yoghurt person (though I keep trying) because it's so sour and I hate sour.

RawrDinosaur 07-09-2011 10:12 AM

Fage 2% is the only brand for me!

to answer the person above, the taste is almost identical to a good, thick, rich sour cream, in the better quality greek yogurts.

Bad quality greek yogurt will be thin and overly sour/tangy.

Even if you don't like it plain, you can cook with it. It makes a great substitute for pretty much any creamy sauce(mayo, alfredo, sour cream, oils in cooking, etc). I swear I could make pretty much anything out of the stuff. :)

Riemontana 07-09-2011 10:22 AM

OH I love chobani, especially the mango. We don't get many of the other brands here but it is improving. I don't care for the plain but we use it for cooking. I really like to put some vanilla in a smoothie. Makes it thick and rich.

JenMusic 07-09-2011 02:00 PM

saef - The full fat Greek yogurt from Cabot is AMAZING. That's how I first started eating, actually (pre-calorie counting!).

philana - A lot of people dislike plain Greek yogurt, at least at first. A strategy I recommend is to doctor it up a bit. I'm partial to vanilla extract, cinnamon, and fruit, but there are tons of ways to change it up. After you get used to the flavor this way, you may find one day that you like it plain.

liliesinmycereal 07-11-2011 06:41 PM

I was reading that greek yogurt is a good sour cream substitute. Has anyone who likes greek yogurt used it for dips?

I do - dill, lemon juice, olive oil(just a spritz), cucumber(diced), and a bit of garlic makes a wonderful dip.

also, mixing it with salsa, or whatever else. very low cal, and good for you.

fattymcfatty 07-11-2011 07:42 PM

I also make a tzatki type sauce with the greek yogurt--lemon juice, salt, pepper, diced cucumber and tomato, dill and a little bit of fresh mint. Then I use it to top grilled chicken in a whole wheat pita with a little hummus. YUM!!!

I agree that Fage, and Dannon Greek are best. Brown Cow is good, too. The Greek Gods is disgusting, thin and runny. Stonyfield does a good one, too.

philana 07-12-2011 09:16 AM

JenMusic - thanks for the tip!

I just had some for the first time, and it was AMAZING. I don't like yoghurt usually - but this is so nice and creamy. And with an apple and a teaspoon of sugar it was the ultimate 'snack'. Only about 200 calories - which really is okay. Do the low fat ones taste as good as these? I'm just thrilled. Because I know I can ween myself off the added sugar and it will be the perfect breakfast.

I had been eating low-carb/high-fat so I was eating full-fat Fage brand greek yogurt. But I recently started a new diet and needed to buy the fat-free kind, and I'm amazed that it's actually really good! It's a little less creamy in texture, and a little more sour, but not by much. It's still miles above regular plain yogurt. :D

Greek Yogurt

So, I read a lot about this, and how people prefer it to other yogurts, but I figured it was due to the nutritional/healthier value compared to other yogurts...but I have to say I FREAKIN' LOVE IT.

I got the one with honey, and I seriously eat it like it's a pint of Ben and Jerrys ice cream. So delicious!:carrot:

Just an FYI for those that don't normally like yogurt or were skeptical in buying something "organic".

alaskanlaughter 07-21-2011 04:19 PM

i bought the plain greek yogurt because it's lower in carbs than any other plain yogurt...i sweeten it with splenda and eat it with cherries....yummm

Bellamack 07-21-2011 05:10 PM

#1 Fage
#2 Chobani
#3 Oikos
YUMBO :)

singing 07-21-2011 05:19 PM

Fage o% is the way to go.For breakfast, lunch and dinner!

hdallas78 07-21-2011 05:51 PM

Chobani is my favorite (the pineapple and mango rock!) and fage comes in at a very close second. FYI if you have a Costco nearby they sell large packs of assorted chobanis pretty cheap and their price on the large sized tubs of plain fage is way better than you can get anywhere else.

crazyaboutgym 07-26-2011 03:19 PM

i like the chobani but i only like the orginal... i dont like the ones with their fruit stuff... its too sweet. its like jelly or jam in my greek yogurt. gross

Thank you for sharing this! I think I may try this since I limit how much greek yogurt I get each week. I get them more for treats. Happily, the Price Rite by me sells Chobani and Fage. Fage is delicious, but even at Price Rite it is expensive.
