This week I will try brussel sprouts!

Last week I had my first sweet potato, I have a feeling that baked in the microwave didn't do it any justice, but I'm glad I know I like them now!

This week the challenge is brussel sprouts, of the frozen variety. What the heck do I do with them? I'm going to google it, but I would love your advice as well. :)

Eh, too bad they're frozen...they're really an item that should be purchased fresh, especially for your First Time. ;)
I slice my Brussels sprouts in half, then place, sliced-side down, in a hot skillet of olive oil and minced garlic. Cover with a lid and allow to wilt and slowly tenderize for ~20 minutes (heat should be about medium, so as to not scorch the garlic and allow some caramelization). A simple dish that brings out the nuttiness of the vegetable.
I wonder if you could defrost the frozen sprouts and proceed with my preparation...? My colleague creates a "hash" with Brussels sprouts using essentially the same few ingredients as I, so I bet even if your defrosted sprouts are soft/soggy, you can sort of do the same thing. Folks also toss sliced or chopped sprouts with oil, garlic and so forth and throw in the oven to bake and caramelize.
Enjoy!

Brussel sprouts are kind of my favorite thing right now. I even got my 8yo to love them. Good on you for trying new things.

brussell sprouts are like my favorite veggie... i have never had them fresh..

i like to just boil them, sometimes i add some spray butter on them, sometimes i eat them plain.

another way i like them is bake them in the oven with some other veggies, and a pkg of onion soup mix..yums..

I really enjoy them shredded fine and either tossed into a coleslaw type cold dish or sauteed with onion and garlic. I find the shredding really cuts the stronger flavour down and makes them quite enjoyable.

I use frozen ones for the following recipe and they are so good I could eat them as my meal instead of a side dish.

I cook them in the microwave following the bag directions, then I put them in a bowl and toss them with a small amount of extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.

I preheat the oven to 350 degrees while they are cooking in the microwave.

When the oven is preheated I put the brussel spouts in an oven proof pan and crush up some pecans to sprinkle over them. I then roast them for 20 minutes.

When they come out of the oven I put a tiny bit of low-fat gorgonzola cheese on top and serve!

(I have also tried it with low-fat bleu cheese and low-fat feta as well, but gorgonzola is my favorite with the pecans.)

I like them just microwaved til they're hot.

They're awesome thawed, sliced in half, tossed in olive oil & garlic and roasted at 425 degress (stir every 5 minutes) for 10-15 minutes, until they start to turn brown around the edges.

I also roast them, but I toss them in an olive oil & balsamic vinegar mixture. That stuff pretty much blackens your pan, so cover the cookie sheet or roasting pan with tinfoil to make cleanup easier.

Ditto what WebRover and Saef said - especially the using foil part!

I've never done this with frozen, only fresh, but others have said roasting works fine with frozen.

I was forced to eat brussel sprouts once as a child, and convinced myself they were disgusting. They are now one of my favorite veggies. :)

Fantastic! THANK YOU everyone who chimed in, sounds like these little characters will fit right in to my veggie MO.

I AM going to try roasting first I think.

I have no choice about the frozen untill I get to the city. Pecans and gorgonzola? WOW, sounds fab. That will have to wait for the city too!:)

I guess that I'm boring- I love them steamed...:)

I looove brussels sprouts.

I usually cut them in half, toss them in a little olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic seasoning, and then I roast them until they're browned and soft. Mmmmmm.

kateleestar 02-14-2011 01:33 PM

I love them too.

I spray my largest skillet with olive oil pam. I have them cut in 1/2 and tossed in pepper and garlic powder. I sautee onion slivers in the pan and then put in the sprouts cut side down in the pan. I cook them till they brown nicely... You'd never know it was healthy! :D
