Are fried eggs good or bad for health?

  • I was looking around online but I couldn't find any good information about it. I fry an egg in olive oil and I make sure that the egg yoke is intact because the egg yoke has lots of good vitamins and minerals. But overall is fried eggs bad or good? If you have it like 3 - 4 times a week?
  • If you are frying them in bacon grease - I would say bad for cholesterol and weight loss. But you're not - so I would say good. The current info out there says that eggs have no effect on blood cholesterol. They have lots of protein and vitamins (don't they have a lot of vitamin E?). I have two everyday and through diet and exercise have been able to bring my cholesterol down.
  • And of course the can be boiled. poached or scrambled. No oil needed. I scramble them in the microwave, no oil or fat necessary.
  • I eat a fried egg 3-4 times a week. It's a favorite post lifting breakfast of mine. Fried egg on toast with a bit of mustard.

I think they're quite healthy. We not talking breaded and deep fried. LOL!

I sure hope not! I eat eggs (whole eggs) everyday. I fry or scramble them in butter.
  • I use the Smart Balance buttery spray to scramble my eggs. No calories per 4 sprays I believe.
  • Got it. Thank you so much for your replies everyone
  • Eggs are very high fat. That isn't inherently bad, but there seems to be this belief out there that eggs are all protein. Egg whites are pure protein, egg yolks are 75% fat. They can certainly be part of a healthy balanced diet, but know what you are eating.
  • I eat TONS of eggs. I think they're fantastic for you! I love the eggs I can get out in town here... they yolks are bright orange! I want to know what they feed the chickens .
  • I use a non stick skillet and Pam cooking spray to "fry" them. Olive oil or a bit of non-hydrogentated margarine like Smart Balance or Earth Balance is good too.

Eggs might be high in fat percentage wise, but if you only eat 1 or 2 they are not going to make up much of your daily calories or fat allowances. The average sized large egg is about 70 calories and 4.5 grams of fat. You will be hard pressed to find anything else for 70 calories as filling as an egg.

Pair it with a whole wheat english muffin (130 calories) and you have an extremely filling 200 calorie breakfast.
  • eggs are fantastic. i eat them about 3 times a week. i have one at a time. sometimes if i want an omelet or scrambled eggs i use one whole egg and 2 egg whites. i use pam spray or, because i am doing weight watchers and need my 2tsp of healthy oil a day-i use olive oil.
  • I love egg whites for a fat-free, low calorie, high protein breakfast, but the yolk contains a good deal of great nutrition that you don't want to miss out on! What my trainer at the gym advised me to do was scramble one whole egg with a serving of egg whites. Then you get lots of protein and volume for an omelet or whatever you desire with out all that yolk, just a little yolk.
