What Ingredient Do You Refuse To Use??
:DLet's have fun! List a cooking ingredient that you refuse to use, whether you are cooking healthy or not.
Mine is Cream of Mushroom Soup.....ugh. I really hate the taste of it. I was perusing slow cooker recipes and so many of them call for the old C of M. I have found that substituting Cream of Chicken (you can use the lighter versions) or Cream of Celery, if a cream soup is called for, make things taste really good. I've actually also learned to make my own white and/or cheese sauces. |
Ketchup. Not that it's healthy but I just... can't use it in anything.
|
Oh thank you! I am not the only person who loathes Cream of Mushroom. I always substitute with Cream of Chicken or the cheese one, depending on what I'm making.
Mine is asparagus. I hate it. I have a bunch of recipe cards that call for it in some way or another, but I just can't do it. |
Crisco! Gag!
As a sub for the C of M soup, I often use ff sour cream and add my own seasoning, or ff cream cheese. |
Olive oil. I know its good fat, but I cant stand the thought of using a tenth of my days calories on a tablespoon of the stuff just to cook my food. I could do so much more with those 120 calories!
|
Sour cream -- I don't really have anything against it, it's just that most recipes call for a very small amount and then I'm left with the huge container of sour cream that I don't have any use for. I usually substitute Greek yogurt or just make a different recipe.
Peas -- I just don't like 'em, so I'll usually substitute another vegetable (but not always--I do like split pea soup and I have a recipe for a sweat pea cream sauce that I really enjoy). |
Ahhh, punkrprincessa, you beat me to olive oil :) I feel the same way, I'd rather have 120 calories of salmon or avocado or even nuts to get my healthy fats.
Another one is bacon. Even before I was aware of calories and trying to lose weight. People put bacon in everything, it's like America's drug. I think bacon is alright, but I don't need it to be in all my food. Especially now that I'm calorie conscious, I feel like I'm always leaving bacon out of recipes when I'm modifying them to fit my plan. Hmm, what else...oh, egg yolks. I almost always just use egg whites when recipes call for an egg. Same thing with olive oil, I don't need to use the calories on the yolk when the whites get the job done just as well, in my opinion. I'm sure there are others. I "modify" most recipes pretty heavily to suit my preferences and to fit in my plan. |
I refuse to use Crisco, corn syrup, artificial sweetener, margarine ... and blue, I have the same issue with sour cream. Good call on substituting Greek yogurt!
|
Sugar for me! I don't use sugar to add on anything. I tend to use splenda for most things and even then I hardly add any extra sugar. I'm just trying to cut it out, because I believe most foods have sugar to begin with. I don't drink regular soft drinks either. I know aspartame is not the best for me either, so I try not to drink many diet soft drinks.

Had to pass this on....unbelievable!! How's this for irony??
After starting this thread on Friday, I left and went out to my fiance's house for the weekend where we were attending a memorial for a close friend. Departed friend's son wanted to cook dinner for everyone and guess what he made?? Smothered pork chops in Cream of Mushroom Soup, topped with french fried onions (an ingredient I almost listed as my second least favorite). It was too funny!! But I ate the meal that he so kindly prepared for us and raved to him how delicious it was. |
Cilantro...i can't stand it.
|
Annie175 - there appears to be a genetic link to how you feel about cilantro. Twin studies have shown that 80+% of identical twins feel the same way about cilantro (they love it or they hate it), but only 45 or so percent of fraternal twins feel the same way. I'm a hater, too (as was Julia Child!).
|
Sacrilege!;) I'm a cilantro LOVER and proud!! It's either love it or hate it with that herb.
|
I hate cilantro! HATE IT! One thing I refuse to eat is caviar. Luckily, none of my recipes have called for it so far ;)
|
