Default How are you going to keep your 4th of July BBQ healthy?

Bob the trainer from the biggest loser asked this question on facebook today.

I promised my boyfriend since we've been healthy most of the month that we could treat ourselves to burgers and chips, but.. We'll use lean hamburger on those extra thin whole wheat buns that are now available. I'll also cook up some corn. Reduced fat potato chips.. And we will definitely be working out prior to eating.

Lean meats marinated in different styles for the grill. Cucumbers and red onions sliced and marinated with salt, Splenda and rice vinegar. Tomatoes chopped and mixed with young corn kernels cut off the cob, red onion, avocado and a SE Asian fish sauce based dressing. Lots of beautiful red leaf lettuce leaves for wrapping the meats instead of bread or potato salad. Watermelon (yes!) iced down and fresh plums off the tree for a sweet finish. And gallons of homemade unsweetened ice tea flavored with peaches that the birds started on (so they had to be butchered to get the peck marks out.....)

Having some folks over...grilled chicken and ribs (I'll have ONE rib because they are amazing, and a chicken breast), fruit salad, grilled corn, a big heirloom tomato salad w/ homemade mozzarella, basil, and balsamic...mmm. Made some big pitchers of iced tea in two flavors.

In most of the US right now, there are plenty of farm fresh veggies and fruit that make it easy to eat lots of healthy, yummy options.

We're having a low country boil with local shrimp, potatoes, and corn, sliced farm fresh tomatoes, and wedges of baby watermelons. (We *love* our CSA - it's like growing your own without all the work!)

My friend's mom makes coleslaw with yogurt and splenda to make it healthier and it actually tastes much better than coleslaw made with mayo.

I was camping with family, so I was really active, I brought my own snacks (veggies, hummus, fruit) and ate a little of what was really worth it - one smore, one home made sausage (outstanding!). It was great!
