I've accidentally eaten yet another PLU code label

  • I forgot to peel it off my apricot before chomping down.

    This is probably my third one in a two-week period. I try to peel these little adhesive labels off the fruit when I get it home, but sometimes, for some reason, I forget. (This also happens with vegetables, particularly tomatoes.) And so I roast them, or stir fry them, or just plain bite into them when I have a piece of fruit in my hand.

    I can't be the only one who's increased her fiber intake by occasionally accidentally ingesting a little paper label. Am I? Fess up.

  • Yeah, did it last night... Sliced my tomato and tossed it into the stir fry without even noticing...

    Twice last week, too. Once on an apple, again on a tomato.
  • LOL, yeah I sliced up some red, yellow and orange bell peppers for a salad to take to our Father's Day BBQ and then had to go digging in the salad to get little stickers out. They were packaged in a 3 pack and I never even thought that they'd have the stickers on them. And I wash them after I slice them up, and never even noticed them in the strainer that I washed them in. It was an adventure.

    For me they are a real pain in the butt on tomatoes when the tomatoes get really ripe, cause when you peel them off you end up losing some of the tomato skin. Grrrr.
  • No... not that I know of... But I can tell you what I HAVE done. I hosted a baby shower the other day and searched wraps with red leaf lettuce. I did not realize how IMPORTANT it is to RINSE the lettuce. I served everyone gritty sandwich wraps. (

    I really try to not eat these but last week I had two apples with more than one label on them. Once I had peeled off the first label I thought I was free to chomp down in peace. But nooooo.....
  • I've eaten my share of these lately! Even though I try to get them off, some of them must be attached with superglue.

  • I like to put them in soup - my veggie chili recipe calls for bell peppers and I include the labels on at least one pepper. Eventually, I'll grow my own peppers and won't have to deal with labels.

    I have also tried to feed them to my husband. He doesn't like them. I have also forgotten to rinse vegetables well enough - spinach and leeks are bad for this - and had very gritty dinner.

    And Kai, thank you, though you should know that when I post here, I'm usually trying to cheer myself up, or I'm procrastinating instead of working on some long, dull project. I've found posting at 3FC really beats mindless junk food snacking as a form of procrastination.
  • Just last night I was chewing on one, thinking "wow, this apple peel is really tough." I was actually about to swallow when I realized it probably wasn't just apple peel.

    Sure enough, when I pulled it out of my mouth, it was the label.

    The weirdest part was that I didn't figure it out sooner, because it wasn't the first time I've ever done it.

  • I am guilty of this, or even worse is I'll have papertowel in my hand wrapped around the thing I'm eating and I've taken a corner of the papertowel in with my bite and not noticed until I looked down and saw some missing
  • I think I read where they are making reduced calorie labels. I think the fruit at Trader Joe's has these. LOL.
  • Surely PLU code labels are a free, no-points food.

    Maybe that's only with the glue off.

    Then they're vegan.

    humans can't digest cellulose, so the label would have no calories. The glue, ink and paper coating could in theory, but the amount used is far under 1/9 of a gram (which is the smallest weight of any substance that can contain one calorie).
