Sea salt

  • Does anyone know a little about sea salt they can share?

What would I use it for and why is it better than regular salt, if it is?

    Thanks.
  • This is what I've heard & read about it, as it's been a while since I last used it, but I am thinking of returning to it again for the reasons listed below (but beware, it is expensive) ...

    1) it is supposed to have minerals in it
    2) not supposed to promote high blood pressure like regular does
    3) not supposed to cause swelling as much either
    4) milder flavor but still tastes like salt

I have a mineral deficiency and have a problem with swelling and blood pressure slipping up, so that is why I was looking at it again. I was just shocked last week when I saw our local store wanted over $7.00 just for a small 4-inch container (spice jar size), but for health reasons, it may be worth it.
  • Here's an interesting article : Sea salt vs. table salt

I use sea salt in a grinder all the time now ...
  • Personally I never use table salt as I find the taste to be inferior to sea salt. The way I see it is that salt isn't great for you, so if you're going to add it to stuff, it might as well taste as good as possible!

I'm not sure what it's like where you are from, but sea salt is widely available in supermarkets here, at various prices depending on its form. As above, it is more expensive than table salt, but how much more expensive really depends on what variety you get.

My favourite stuff is sea salt crystals (I buy this from a brand called Maldon), and the crystals are absolutely delicious sprinkled on top of foods that are ready to serve, like a salad or on top of a baked potato. The coarseness of the crystals tastes wonderful. I wouldn't use this for occasions when I plan to dissolve the salt in the cooking process, as it's a bit of a waste of money - you're paying for the crystallised form. I also use pre-ground stuff as it is cheaper and more suited to occasions where I want to add the salt to something whilst it is cooking to get a good flavour. It looks similar to table salt, except the grains are considerably coarser.
  • Thanks for the help! I think I'm going to give it a try.
  • to get the minerals, you need to get the sea salt that hasn't been whitened, There is grey and pink that I have seen. Its really yummy
  • I've had this on my list to try too
  • I read somewhere that sea salt is lower in sodium than table salt.....not sure how that works.....
