I do a couple of things:
scrambled egg whites with 1/4 c Morning Star Farms crumbles added in served on a ww tortilla with 1 T cheese and a little salsa scrambled egg whites with red onions, red or orange peppers and maybe some mushrooms and/or ham (I LOVE the idea of cutting it up and storing it away--the worst part of this is cutting it up when you're in a hurry) Barbara~that Trader Joe's egg white salad--in what section do you find this? Is it frozen or in the area where they keep the prepared salads? that sounds wonderful!! |

When you think about it, the egg yolk is the placenta that a baby bird eats while it is gestating. It's an excellent source of nutrition for them (much better than the bread that people are wont to throw out for birds).
I have found that they won't eat microwaved yolks though. But they ate the ones I put out that were fried and hard boiled. It could also have been the time of year, though. I put out the microwaved ones in the summer when they have lots of other food to eat. I think it would have helped if I'd mixed some birdseed with it. |

Ok, I just read this thread because I eat egg whites almost every morning, and I (gasp!) throw the yolks away! My husband and I love birds, and we have quite a few in our yard - we have a blue bird house and have had baby blues the last two or three years. We also have lots of gold finches (and some house finches) this year, lots of hummingbirds, and other kinds.
So... now I feel pretty lame for throwing out the yolks all this time. The birds could've been really pumping up on protein! Any idea if they might eat them raw? I guess they wouldn't be raw after a couple of minutes - it's been 100 here 3 days in a row! Anyway, thanks for the very interestiing and useful info -- who knew?! I was at Trader Joe's yesterday - got all my usual items, but I plan to look for that egg white salad next time... sounds yummy. My husband likes to say if I don't watch it, I'm going to turn into an egg! Ok, back to the thread question... I eat eggs many ways, but one variation I've eaten quite often this summer is to fry the whites (3 or 4) in a bit of pam, throw in about 1/8 c. low fat feta, slice a quarter of a Haas avocado and tomatoes over the top, and maybe tear a little sweet basil to go with it too. Basil goes wonderfully with eggs, if you are a basil kind of gal. That's a pretty filling breakfast for me. Sometimes I put that on a small wrap or pita. |
