What's a serving???
Okay...I know alot of people believe in eating "fresh" veggies but I'm not real good at cooking them and I like the Glory brand of veggies. Now, I know what the can will say something like 1/2 cup is a serving for these 30 calories. Now, If i work that into my daily menu to eat the whole can and the whole can has 2 servings in it....my question is....did I just get 2 servings of the 5 a day servings I am suppose to get. By eating 2 servings out of the can, do i only need 3 more servings of another veggie to get 5 veggie servings???

Yes! A serving of veggies may not be as much as you think.
Check out this link: http://www.5aday.com/html/consumers/serving.php And actually, the recommendation is 5 servings of fruits/veggies combined (for women eating ~1600 calories/day). 2 fruit and 3 veggies. The recommendation goes up for people who eat more calories... This is why a lot of us find it easy to eat many 'servings' of veggies! I just wish they did it by weight too. I frequently eat 100 g of baby carrots for lunch and call it a serving, but for all I know it's not! I guess I could break out my measuring cups! |
I hauled out my Canada Food Guide and it sayss Fresh, frozen or canned fruit and vegetables .5 cup is a serving Leafy greens cooked .5 cup raw 1 cup Juice .5 cup or 1 whole fruit is a serving
I have the recomendations for women 19-50 is 7-8 I hope this helps. If you need the other food groups I would be glad to post them |
