Why Do Apples Make Me So Hungry?
Apples are supposed to be full of fiber and therefore a great appetite suppressant. Whenever I eat them (whether I'm hungry or not) I feel like I'm STARVING 15 minutes later. What's up with that?

Well, an apple that weighs 1/3 a pound only has about 4 grams of fiber, so it's not really "full of fiber" to the point where it would be satiating. I don't know what to tell you about the hunger issue, sorry!

I googled it and there are a lot of others who have the same issue, but nobody had a definite response as to why it happens...they were all just guessing. My friend and I were just discussing it because it happens to her too.

I don't eat apples very often due to that reason. If a particular food doesn't "work" for me, I simply don't eat it. I do like the taste of them though, so occasionally I will eat them. But very rarely. I find I can get more "mileage" for my 80-100 calories elsewhere.

Maybe it has to do with the acidity? Whenever I eat it on an empty stomach, it makes me queasy. It works well when eaten with some fat or protein though. Try it with some nuts, will last a long time.

I have the same exact problem!!! But I like my apples so I just eat another one later if I'm still hungry. Generally I eat apples before I get my real breakfast or on the way home from work where I'll be watered and fed upon arrival :) Apples are just there for fill my belly the little bit they can until I get a real meal.

I agree with Zepher. Try a little protien like a small piece of cheese or some peanut butter. When I eat apples I usually have spread a bit of peanut butter on them and that really fills me up.
|
Yeah, that's what I've been doing. I guess what I'm really trying to get to the bottom of is WHY it makes me feel that way. I'm just curious. I've read a few different reasons but nobody is really sure.
|
I was hoping to find the answer......it happens to me, too.

What's strange is that I read a study showing that people who ate an apple 30 minutes before their meals consumed fewer calories during their meals.
I like to use apples as a dessert - baked (zapped in the microwave) with some sugar-free maple syrup in the center - that works for me! |
Wow I had no idea other people experienced the same thing! I've always thought myself abnormal for actually getting hungrier after an apple than I was before eating it. Good to know it's not just me. And btw, I obviously don't have an explanation :p

I've never noticed it with apples, probably because I eat them so rarely...
However, I do remember that one time I split a papaya with DBF and not only were we not thrilled with it (at least by itself, I can stand it mixed in a fruit salad), but not too long afterwards we were both ravenous! We had even eaten large dinners that night and weren't particularly hungry when we were eating it (bad, I know), but we did anyway because it was going to go bad. Maybe it's the papain enzyme? Anyway, sorry to get off topic! :-D |
