Quarter-pound of Roast Beef...only 120 calories?

  • Quarter-pound of Roast Beef...only 120 calories?

The wife brought home some lunch meat (including roast beef) the other day..I've shied away from roast beef and pork and such lately because of calories but she claimed that she had the deli-worker read off the nutritional information off the package that they shaved the beef from. Called Dan's Prize (a subsidary of Hormel?) and it was 60 calories per 2oz. Thats 120 calories per 4 oz. Hmmmmm.... That's less than the chicken breast I buy which is 146 calories per 4oz cooked weight.
    Possible?
Have I found a tasty supplement/alternative to my never-ending diet of skinless chicken breast? Maybe its some sort of amalgamation of meat by-products like some of Hormel's other more famous products?
  • well I just did a cursory search and I didn't find any that was that low calorie, but I did find some that went as low as 90 calories per 2 oz.

Really though pork isn't bad as long as it isn't fatty and you can get some lean cuts of beef. The main thing is to not overdo it. Beef tends to have more saturated fat than both chicken breast and lean pork cuts, so that is something to take into consideration.

I personally eat all sorts of meats and lots of non meat dishes as well. I do tend to eat a lot more chicken and pork than beef though.
  • I went to the store and had the deli guy let me read the actual label. Sure enough...2oz is 60 calories. Main ingredients: Beef, Water.
    Huh.

    I'm in love.
  • Jeff - don't avoid pork, either! Pork tenderloin, or pork tenderloin chops, have almost the same nutrition facts as boneless skinless chicken breast! Grab a pork tenderloin at the store, marinate it in some soy sauce, ginger, garlic, maybe a little orange zest or the juice of an orange, then grill or bake. Mmmm...a nice alternative to eating the same protein sources all the time.

I'm glad you get your roast beef!
  • The Hillshire Farm deli meats, including roast beef and pastrami, are all 60 calories per 2 oz, so it isn't unheard of. The reason the calories are so low is that they put a ton of water in lunch meat. So the amount of protein you are getting is also probably less than you would normally find in that amount of beef.

I limit my calories to 1300-1400 a day, and while I do eat a lot of chicken (but in wildly different recipes, very rarely do I just eat a plain chicken breast), I also eat a lot of other meat. Lean ground beef, lean ground pork, pork tenderloin, beef sirloin, turkey sausage, etc. There are lots of alternatives to your chicken breast. Maybe you should invest in a good low-calorie cookbook (including one that gives you some fresh ideas for your chicken breast). Personally, I recommend anything by Cooking Light.
  • I'm ok with other meats (the wife is cooking pork roast tonight)....just that the 60 calories seemed obscenely low to me. My favorite is the supreme lean ground beef (160 calories per 4 oz). I use it as the basis of my famous "1-Pound Dinner" including a quarter pound hamburger (mushrooms, onions, lettuce), and half a pound of steak fries!! (oreida, 110 cals per 3 oz). Only 540 calories. YUMMY!!
