Yoga

Before I got fat, I used to do Pilates all of the time, but have always been very curious about Yoga (and just never followed through to check it out). I really like how Yoga bodies have that long, lean look, even better than Pilates bodies.

Right now, I don't want to go to a Yoga class and sit in the middle of a bunch of thin women, I can't put myself through that right now, not yet :^: so I am wondering what a good DVD is good to start with to learn?

I hear there are different types of Yoga and I've read a little about them, but I'm still not exactly sure of the differences in those not knowing anything about it. I just like what I see in the results of those who do it. I'd love to hear more about it from those who do/did it, what you've tried and what you like best and why perhaps? I'd really appreciate it bunches. :)

Please help? Thanks!

Hi,

My favorite yoga DVD's can be found on Amazon. I have one called "Yoga for Stress Relief" and one called "Yoga AM and PM". They're both taught by Barbara Benagh. They're part of an interactive series in which you can pick your level and choose the amount of time for your yoga workout. It's great for beginners because you can start out easy and work your way up. Just an idea - good luck finding a workout that works for you. :)

Thank you!! I was reading about the Hot Yoga classes...looks like that would be really interesting. Have read that a lot of people find them to be fun and it burns a ton. Once I get familiar with Yoga in general (and lose a bit more), I'd love to try a Hot Yoga class locally.

I started with Biggest Losers Weight Loss Yoga. I love it! 3 levels and a modifier if you need to work up to it. I bought a few months ago, Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown. That is a nice challange with 2 30min workouts. A beginner girl to follow as well as an advanced girl to follow. When Jillian is not in teacher mode she's more medium range. I always ache after hers!

I found this great website for exercise DVDs. They have sample clips from all the DVDs which I found very helpful. I'm picky about the voices and the background music. (Denise Austin annoys the crap out of me  and I can't stand music that sounds like a soundtrack for a bad porno. :o ) I ordered a Budokon DVD...can't wait for it to get here!

Thanks, everyone!! I'm going to buy 2-3 mentioned in this thread and try to see what works best for me. Jillian Michaels, oh boy, just hearing her name makes my body ache! LOL

Rochester: Bad porno music?? ROFL!!! That's all you needed to say about Denise's DVD's! haha!!! :tired:

I've always wanted to try Budokon, let me know what you think! I currently do Yoga (and have been for a couple years now) and I love boxing/martial arts type stuff just was never that into Tae Bo lol. Since Bukodon is a combination, I'd really like to try it!

If you want a nice, relaxing yoga workout, Candelight Yoga is awesome! I also like AM/PM yoga for beginners. Its nice and simple workout for either the morning or evening.

I love my hot yoga class. It's not Bikram, and our class is only 60 min (versus Bikram's 90 min), but we do much of the same poses. I have never sweat from my forearms in my life before! haha.

Just be wary of "relaxing" yoga workouts. They usually aren't very much workout, so if you're looking to lose weight, incorporate other exercise. The Jillian yoga DVD's are great workouts, as are any "vinyasa" yoga workouts (vinyasa just means flow, which translates to cardio).

It depends on what your goals are, I like to do yoga to relax and also to help stretch, I don't do yoga to get a cardio workout.

Don't be intimidated to go to a yoga class.

I go to a study when I'm down south that has everyone from 2 nearly 100 year old tiny tiny Chinese ladies to an amazing couple that are each over 300 lbs. I've been going from my highest weight of 280 and there has always been at least one person the same size or larger than me; I'm in a small town of about 20,000 so I can imagine there are all shapes of people in other places.

I promise no one cares. The instructors can help you with form problems you might not notice when at home.

I understand getting comfortable with yoga first, just wanted to say don't be intimidated by going to a class.

Thanks!!

My interest in it is for stretching & elongating the muscles. I have no interest in it for cardio...I do cardio already. Im almost in a size 16 bottom now so when I hit it...Im going to try an actual class. Ive already started Jillians yoga at home. When I hit 14...Im going to try a Hot Yoga class.

I'm really struggling. I'm just not flexible enough. I feel like a tortured pretzel. Or like Gumby if he'd been left in the sun for too long. :D

If you're more flexible than me, you would probably enjoy it. It is a well done video.
