how do you figure out frame size?

any clue?

You can use your wrist size or elbow breadth combined with your height. Here is one site that uses those standard means:

ok thanks! i can't find my measuring tape, but i estimate my wrist is maybe 5 or 6 inches around. which the calculator says is a small frame. if that's true, that's so hard to wrap my head around. Can you have wide hips and a small frame?

Well I've got narrow hips (32 1/2" last time I measured) and a large frame so I guess it's possible.

I am 5'6 and always thought I had a large frame.

Then as I got smaller, I thought I had a medium frame.

Now that Im 126, I clearly have a small frame. Not extra small...but yeah small.

Wide-set hip bones, and still a small frame.

A girlfriend of mine is like 107lbs, 5'7 (naturally thin, eats like a horse, ugh!) and her hips in her late 20s just...started to spread apart even though she gained zero weight she went up a size in jeans. And girl def has an extra small frame. Anyway, yes you can def have a small frame and wide hips.

Mine are 34in without much fat there (the widest part of my body is def my protruding hip bones), and in the wrist/elbow test Im small for sure.

i find that so interesting! it's weird how we are all different. when i was 15, i was about 140lbs in...a 10 i think. maybe some 8's.i think i was close to, 34, 28, hips around 34 also. it didn't seem that i could get any smaller than that. i felt really healthy. this was just eating lots of fruit and exercising. so now years later, it's sorta like a dream? could i go back to that size, or close to it? or 150? it always seemed so unattainable if that makes sense. then again it's all relative, when you haven't been below 200 for more than 5 years even being under 200 seems impossible. but now, that all feels different. it's like ...i could lose 10 more pounds and stop. then look healthy, lots of muscle, and be happy with it, if that makes sense. However, on any chart, at almost 5.5 170 is near the heavy end of over weight range, although having more muscle definitely affects that.
it's just interesting....

i read these posts talking about how their highest weight was 150, or that their goal is 110 pounds...stuff like that. my thoughts go back to my own experiences of weighing 100 lbs in 6th grade. 12 yrs old. i was a healthy weight. already close to my height now. i could never weigh 120 lbs! but i have to remind myself that women with those body types are likely like my half sister and my daughter. they are naturally lean and tall. slim hips. it's difficult to get either of them to sit down for a meal, they just want to snack or eat a few bites and leave.

well anyway, i try to keep an open, non judgemental mind. maybe i too have a small frame, it's not a good idea to tell myself what's impossible. i don't know what will happen. i thought i weighing more than 200 would 'never' happen to me, but i could have kept going to 250 if i didn't change when i did. so, we just don't know what's possible. It will be interesting and exciting to see the new changes in my body the closer i get to a normal weight. thanks so much to everyone on 3fc. it's so inspiring seeing/talking to so many who have proven we really can break down the 'walls' in our mind. So many of you have proven that we can be healthy again. and thank you Xty. i always enjoy reading your posts :)

Aww thanks! I am really so, so thankful for finding 3fc.

Id been maintaining just fine, but felt super isolated. No one knows the struggles of someone who was formerly obese and is now normal weight. Empathy is so much better than sympathy. :)

This site tells me- based on my elbow breadth - that I have a small frame. I dont believe that at all.

A couple of months, I did a bootcamp class and the instructor (when doing my measurements) measured my ankle and says that I have a large frame as my ankles were 9" in circumference. :?:

Dianne042425 11-09-2010 11:52 AM

Slim,

Ive never heard of ankle measurements deciding frame size - What is considered a "small framked ankle" if 9 is too large? Im curious now. I think I will go measure my ankle lol

pinkflower 11-09-2010 12:03 PM

Lol well I just measured my wrists and ankle. My left wrist is 5 inches on the dot. My right ankle is a hair over 8.5 inches

But if you gained weight, you'd gain it all over, so even if wrists generally don't get padded as much as other parts of your body, they also do get fat. I mean if someone were at ideal weight with a very low body fat percentage, it may have some credibility, but otherwise I don't see how it could always be accurate?? Maybe I'm wrong though!

WOW! And I thought I had small wrists! Yours are .5 inches smaller than mine! Interesting though, my ankles are .5 inches smaller than yours ( 8 on the dot ). Do you have a small frame?

I think I'm built to be small...size 4 ring, 7 shoe. I think I could go on the lower end of my healthy weight and still look good....especially with my flabby tummy from having 2 9 pound babies & c-sections. I want to find out & will probably lower my goal weight :D
