Resting Heart Rate
Do any of you know your resting heart rate? How do I find mine?
I'd be curious to know all of yours if you know it! lol I'm weird I know.. |
Take your pulse first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed. Use your pointer and middle fingers, not your thumb. Start counting with zero. You can count for a whole minute, or for 30 seconds and multiply by two. Some people count for 10 and then multiply by six but I think that leaves too large a margin of error.
I surveyed a bunch of sites and they all generally agreed on what to do. I swear one morning mine was 51, but lately it's been closer to 56. I was really psyched about that 51 because I think that's pretty darn low. According to Wikipedia, Lance Armstrong's RHR is between 32 and 34! Yow! And I don't think you're weird at all -- I love measuring things!!! :D |
Mine is typically at 53 or 54. It just doesn't get that low no matter how fit I seem to be.
Normal is 60 to 80. Athletes are typically in the range of 45 to 60. I haven't measured before I get out of bed before. I'll have to try that. |
Once when I gave blood my hear rate was 49, the nurse wrote on my form, "very athletic" I was sooo proud :D
|
Interesting.. So this is an accurate way to tell how fit you are? I will have to try this out. Thank you all for putting in your 2 sense!
|
It's not accurate at all! A low heart rate runs in my family, and even not at all fit, morbidly obese, my heart rate was below 50 at the doctors! Of course it is a benchmark, if you get fitter it gets lower, but you generally can't compare between people. (at the gym, you get heart rate tests too to determine your fitness, and I always scored better then my thin athletic friends, so it's a load of********, I got tired from walking up a flight of stairs)
|
You absolutely cannot compare between people. This is true. There are so many factors that determine heart rate. My heart rate has been higher than one would expect my whole life.
