Runner's High! (NSV!!!)

I started running this past winter, and I have to say my "runner's highs" have been few and far between. Today I had the best run...7K along the lakeshore here in Hamilton. Its about 20 degrees C out, and a light breeze. The first half of the run was a bit tought, but on the way back, I felt like I could have kept going for ever! It was fantastic! I really feel like I can achieve my 10K race goal!

Anybody else had any NSVs recently?

What does NSV stand for?

I just started running about a month ago and am working my way through the c25k program. I have heard about this runner's high. I look forward to experiencing it for the first time. I have to say, I've always thought running was a crazy thing to do to the body, so I am very surprised that I am now doing it. I've heard many runners say that they become addicted to the high. Time will tell!

Runner's high a positive addiction

Nic Sounds like you'll have no problem with the 10 K. I used to run a long time ago with my dog down near Lake Ontario every morning. The high I got was usually a mental one where I solved a problem that had been bugging me or just felt at peace due to the surroundings. Glad to hear you're enjoying it as much as I did.

It's a positive addiction!

Thanks Dagmar! Have you ever done the Oasis Zoo Run? Its a 10K route around the Toronto zoo...thats what I'm planning to race :) I love the zoo, so I think it'll be an awesome time!

Congratulations on a great run! I am a runner too, started last October. I still don't belive I've experienced a "high" when running, but I have become totally addicted to it - I love getting out in the fresh air, feeling good about exercising my cardiovascular system, and seeing what I'm actually capable od doing. I actually ge a bit twitchy if I can't get a run in after a day or two.

I'm starting to get that "twitchy" effect too if I don't run for a few days! I love it! I never thought that I could run like this...I'm asthmatic, and running has always been hard for me. I still run slow, but I am sooooo proud of my progress!

I just looked at your photos Windy - wow, your progress is so inspirational!!!!! I'm aiming for a half marathon next summer!

Nic~I seriously don't think I'll ever experience that runner's high myself, but glad to hear you did. I've heard that for some people, they don't experience it until well after the 10k mark and I know I'll never progress past 5k (if I make it that far!). Right now my goal is to make it past week 5 of the c25k! Seriously, I've never run before and just making it through an 8 minute interval was cause for celebration. 20 minutes just seems so impossible to me.

I can't wait for it to cool down and for DH's football season to be over so I can start running again. The treadmill is just not the same!

stiebena 09-02-2007 10:20 AM

I didn't think that I'd ever make it past 5K either! That was my original goal, and now I surprise myself everytime I surpass it...keep up the good work!!!!
