Baggy Clothes

As you know, at my highest weight i was 250, and clothes barely fit at all. i keep dreaming of a time when i will be able to wear whatever i want and look good in it, but the reality is that i have not yet bought a single thing. Even now at 152, i am still wearing clothes that are huge and baggy on me because i'm not comfortable enough with how i look to dare try on anything smaller. i just have this feeling...fear...that if i were to try on something smaller and it not fit, that i would burst into tears and then feel like crap about not being at my goal weight yet. i just don't see the point in going out and buying a bunch of new things that will be too big in a few months.

Anyone else having a similar problem with thier attire as they get smaller?

On the flip side, isn't is a little depressing to see yourself in frumpy/non-fitting clothes. You have lost a lot of weight, you need to celebrate that thinner you!!!! :congrat:

The downside of losing weight is the cost of new clothes, especially when you are on a tight budget and buying a new wardrobe every couple of months is out of the question. My suggestion..... Buy a few versitile things that will go the distance until you get to your next size. Nice pair of black slacks, pair of jeans, a couple of nice tops, jacket... that sort of thing. Take a fashion forward friend with you and just work your way down the sizes until you find the one that fits. Your friend will help you to determine what looks great. (I know because my best friend is constantly hollaring at me that I am wearing one size to big!) I bet you will be verrrrrry surprise to see what size you can comfortably wear.

Then get rid of the the things that are to big. That way you have no choice but to stay where you are, or continue to go down. Trust me it is much more rewarding to continue to buy smaller clothese, than to have to go back and replace big stuff!!! :cheer2:

While I was still losing weight, I did put off buying new clothes as long as I could, just because I knew anything I bought wasn't going to fit for very long. I took in my pants and wore shirts baggy, but then it got to the point where I just couldn't take stuff in enough. I absolutely have to look professional for work, so that forced me to invest in some new suits.

I really encourage you to go out a buy a couple of key pieces that fit. The problem with wearing your baggy clothes is that clothes that don't fit aren't flattering. Seeing myself in new clothes was really motivating because I did look a lot better in them than in my old baggy clothes. When I put on my baggy clothes, it depressed me because I did still look fat in them. You don't have to spend a lot of money, I bought stuff on sale at Target (not business suits, of course--those I had to just suck it up and spend money on, but casual clothing). You've lost a lot of weight and you are doing great; you deserve to look good. I think you'll feel better about yourself if you have some clothes that fit and you'll get more compliments too.

If you aren't sure of your size, grab one thing in a lot of different sizes. Bring them all into the dressing room and start trying on the biggest size and work your way down to one that fits. Stop when you get to the one that fits and you won't have to worry about trying something on that's too small. Even when ordering clothes online, I often order the same thing in a couple of sizes and just send one back, because I'm still trying to figure out my size at a lot of vendors right now.

Its weird how as you get thinner, the point of clothing becomes more about looking good, rather than looking ok and hiding parts of your body

I just forced myself to throw out all my old, baggy clothes and go buy some new ones over the last few weeks. I found that I actually ENJOY it now--because I'm SMALLER and I can actually shop in places I never could before (you know--the ones at the mall that don't carry above a size 13 in jeans and above a large in shirts?). There are some great sales going on right now--I bought 8 shirts for $60 (it's back-to-school time, so lots of sales!).

I've got another 18 pounds to lose and I'm probably going to drop another jeans size and maybe a shirt size, but I look at it this way now: I DESERVE to look and feel great no matter what size I am right now. I don't have to condemn myself to live in baggy clothing until my goal weight is achieved! The way I saw it, what's $60 or $100 for clothes that I'll be able to wear for awhile? I spend that on eating at a restaurant twice...and that's a more transient thing than clothes that last for awhile.

Don't be afraid of letting your fat clothes go. I donated my donateables to charity and I tossed the rest. It's okay to let it go. You'll feel better when you do!

:bravo: Good for you! Try to let some of the baggy clothes "go" as well, maybe one article for each new thing you bought? That way you are "letting go" of your former fat self :D.

When I started losing weight I kept wearing clothes that were too big for me. Instead of buying new pants I bought a belt to hold up my pants.

I didn't want buy clothes that I thought would be too big soon after I bought them. Eventually I did go out and buy some new clothes. Most of my tops were ok, but there was a big difference in how my pants & jeans fit.

Part of my hesitation in buying clothes is that I had clothes from when I was around 130 and I had clothes from when I went up 2 sizes and I was over 165. When I started losing weight I didn't want to spend more money on another size.

I still have so many outfits from 30 pounds ago--most are size 12 and I'm anywhere between a 4 and an 8 these days (depending on the store). I look at the things I used to wear and most were baggy and comfortable. I'll try them on from time to time and even if they DID fit, I feel so frumpy in them! I'd rather have things that are a little more fitted!

It's so true. When I was at my highest weight, everything had to be baggy. I wouldn't even look at clothes that were the least bit snug, much less try them on and buy them. There were entire styles of clothing that just didn't exist for me. I also wouldn't wear anything that didn't cover my waist. I did not own one single dress. Skirts were okay, but no dresses, because they showed my waist.

Now, it's the opposite. I look at clothes that are a little loose and think they won't be tight enough. I want everything to be as fitted as possible (not quite skin tight, but close) and I've developed an addiction to dresses.

I'm the opposite, lol. I became obsessed with shopping when I lost weight. When I was heavier, almost every single shopping outing nearly had me in tears. Now, I thrive on fashion and clothes, hahaha.

Go buy some clothes, girl! Nothing is more motivating that getting clothes that fit and really show off your new body! Try eBay - you can get good quality new and used clothes for pretty cheap there. 5'6" and 152? I'd say you are probably in a 12. Maybe a 10! Go and enjoy your new self.

MileHighMama 08-14-2007 04:02 PM

I agree with what everyone here has said. Go buy some clothes and start experimenting with what looks good on you. You are so close to goal now. You need to get familiar with the stores and what's out there. When I was losing, it was hard to buy stuff that I knew wouldn't fit for long but I justified the expense by reminding myself how much I was saving not eating junk food and fast food all the time, and by the fact that I was calorie counting and not doing a food program that requried me to buy expensive food. Really, Thinny, go shopping. It's a great pasttime when you're craving something you shouldn't eat and a great way to stay inspired to keep losing!
