Hi everyone,

Had a hectic end of week. FIL went into a convalescent home. decided to finally wean my 2 year old and my computer cord broke.

I forget if I popped in to tell you all that I ran 5k two days ago. I was so thrilled. Today I did the same and I am still happy about it but the first time is the best ya know.

Dana hang in there with finals. And I hope you have a good b-day party Tina.

I admire all you runners

My body is just not built for running. I can jog only at about the same pace as a fast walk and I always feel lousey at it. Never once have I felt the 'runner's high'.

Now that the weather has turned warmer and thoughts turn to sailing, I've been sticking to my sit-up plan. I need those muscles when sailing my Hobie Wave catamaran.

It's a great little boat that skims the water in the lightest of breezes. And when the wind blows up to 20 knots, I can get it to 'fly a hull' where one of the catamaran hulls comes completely out of the water. That's when I need strong stomach muscles to hike out and balance out the boat.

At the end of last summer, as I got down to around 125 lbs, I was having trouble righting the Hobie by myself after I capsized it. (Sometimes when I'm flying a hull and a strong gust hits, the boat and I get catapulted over).

This summer I'll be a minimum of 15 lbs lighter, so I'm really going to have to work on A) staying upright and B) leveraging my strength and body weight to right the boat when I flip it.

Good afternoon! I went for a lovely walk with my friend ... almost 4 kms. It was very nice.

Stop reading right here ... the rest gets to be self pity, venting etc .... I realise I'm dumping on you my friends.

The only problem was that she's a dentist's receptionist. I wish I'd never spoken to her about my fear and appointment tomorrow. I'm sure she meant well but now I'm just nauseous.
Ya know ... if you dropped in front of me, I could do a dozen things to help you ... fix you up ... patch you up ... support your family ... call in the troops. I have raise three children to adult age very successfully. I can do real pushups .... however, the dentist is an entirely different matter.
I'm cold, shivering, sweating, my pulse is 105 at rest, 15 minutes after taking my little white pill, just for going to the dentist. It's sooo bad.
Work called couldn't I just slip out for my appointment and come back and finish my shift? I started crying.
I'm made a lot of strides in the departments of self worth, control, anxiety, depression ... but I just feel so low.

Oh my God Susan, I am right there with you about the dentis:(

I am pathologically afraid of the dentist and I'm not really sure where it comes from.

Oh SusanB, I am sorry you have to go through all that angst (sp?).....sometimes the anticipation is way worse than the actual experience, but no matter what, it's not fun to have your mind do a number on you. Hope you are in tip top shape and it goes well and easily.

Hikerchick, a big YAY for you and your run! You must be proud as a peacock. Good for you.

Actually, Carolyn, if you don't mind me venturing a suggestion, sit ups aren't the best exercise for you to do for your boating strength. Try bicycles (knee to elbow, alternating). That has been shown to be one of the best all around, will hit the major core groups including the obliques. And if you are doing situps, make sure you do them s l o w l y and lead with your shoulders, not your head or elbows. Also, to ensure that your lower back is also worked (it is part of your core group), do superman exercises (check them out on line). It's always important to work opposing muscle groups together.

Well, it was a good eating weekend, except for a handful of roasted peanuts and wasabe peas....and yesterday I got a nice lower body floor workout. Today was cleaning, cooking for the week, and doing an art project for an online group I belong to. A satisfying weekend. Hope all of you had the same.

((Susan B)) - some good thoughts -

with each visit to dentist throughout our lives, time has passed and their methods have become less painful, less invasive each time! This visit has a good chance at being a better one!

you are as normal as rain to have these feelings, so no reason to think negatively (self pity? NOT, since so many others are right there with you).

All us sweet-hearted moms promise our kids a treat after the dentist - whether a milkshake or a comic book! So YOU get to have a treat after the dentist, too (make it a good one) and can look forward to it all the time you're at the office (in fact, definitely think about that instead of dentist)!

What a nice time to practive breathing for stress relief! One idea - Breathe in for several seconds then take twice as long for exhale, thinking about counting seconds.

I know what you mean... Sometimes I wonder if I could ever achieve a 'runner's high' or even what that is. When I move back to Calgary (May) I'm going to start trying to running and see if it works.

Susan (((((((hugs))))))) Everyone has their phobias. Take your little white pill and go (you know you need to) and ask for novocaine if you have to have any procedure. Best of luck to you, and please don't feel that you're dumping on us. We're all here for you!

Runners~I know what you mean about never feeling that "high" from running. All I get is out of breath! I've known many people who do reach that high, but for me it just isn't there and that's probably why I just can't get myself to do more than a fast walk.

Artmaker~bicycles are great! I hadn't thought of those in such a long time! Next workout, I'm going to incorporate some! Thanks for the reminder.

As for me, I won't discuss my calories today. I know I went over, but it was planned. Breakfast was minimal (oatmeal and coffee), no lunch, early dinner which was what did me in. So now here I sit thinking I've "missed" my dinner--which I only ate early due to a meeting at the usual dinner hour. I want some dessert (thankfully, nothing we have on hand sounds good).

Thanks gals! This morning I just feel kinda numb, frozen in time. All I really have to do is get myself clean, take the pill and get out the door ... that's all. I've got two and a half hours to do that.

I should eat something.

Carey, I do what I call walk/jog .... just some of each. I dunno if someday I'll be a real live runner or not but it makes me feel like I'm making strides with cardio.

Just popping back to this thread for an update. The new dentist is a lovely young woman. She did megbucks worth of testing and found "no surprises". We made a plan of attack between the two of us and as long as I have ativan, I think I can do it.
I'm very sleepy .....

editted to say that sooner or later I might have a picture to post in which I'm actually smiling.

sweet_talker 03-05-2007 02:46 PM

 yay, I've been following the dentist business, I'm glad it worked out :D

alinnell 03-05-2007 02:53 PM

yay Susan!!! Glad it went well!

canadian mom 03-05-2007 04:21 PM

well this weekend was not good on calories for me but I knew that was going to happen. It is my sons 4th B-day today and we celebrated yesterday so I had a piece of chocolae cake with peanut butter icing (his fav) with ice cream. The night before we had chipe while watching a movie and of course I couldn't have just 1 bowl. At least there is no more chips or cake in the house now and I am drinking water like a mad women lol. Now if I can get thru next weekend AF will be here.
