Question About Refried Beans
I have a questions... I know it says we can have beans, can I have refried beans??
|
I would say yes if you "re-fried" them yourself. I made some by mashing beans while heating them. I omitted the oil but they were still spreadable like refried beans. If you want to by the pre-canned refried beans, I would suggest going for the lowfat/fat free ones and reading the label.

Even traditional refried beans (with lard) are generally quite low in fat (at least from the can). For example I have a can of Old El Paso traditional Refried beans here in front of me, made with partially hydrogenated lard. I generally buy the fat free (and I especially don't care for anything that's partially hydrogenated, if I can help it), but hubby brought this one home, and the nutritional info is pretty impressive, regardless.
For 1/4 of the can (1/2 cup), there are only 100 calories (only 5 from fat). Even though the fat is lard (not a SBD friendly fat), 5 calories means that there is about 1/8 of a tsp of lard per serving. 5% calories from fat, is an excellent profile, and with 6g of dietary fiber in each serving, that's pretty awesome, too. I consider that very SBD for one simple reason. Lard is pork fat. Lean pork is allowed on SBD, and a lean porkchop is going to contain alot more than 5 calories from fat (lard). So, even traditional refried beans is going to generally be a better choice than almost any meat choice. Refried beans made without lard are also easy to find, and the flavor is just as good (which is why I would have bought the fat free, if I'd been shopping, but the nutrition info is so good, I'm not going to worry about it). Restaurant refried beans are another matter entirely, as there's no way to know how much fat is added in the kitchen. |
Thank you both Ladies. I was thinking that I should be able to use them, since I was a teenager, I love to just have some refried beans with salsa on it and I can eat it with or without cheese and with or without a tortilla. Yummy. Thank you again
