My diet is a spiritual matter after all.
If you know me from the 100 pound club, you probably have seen posts from about struggling in 2011. In 2008, I started getting a grip on my weight problem and up until November 2010 did well. I lost over 100 pounds and got my weight below 200.
I gave into temptation for the holidays and I have struggled ever since. During the past 3 years, I have debated with myself about if, or how much of, my diet is a spiritual and sin matter. I used to say that losing weight is the hardest thing that I have ever done but, when breaking this down, I have to say that what is actually hard is controlling what and how much I eat. I struggle when I make excuses like, "God has too many large things (like murder) to be concerned with. Surely he does not care if I eat a honey bun." Reflecting on my dieting history, I have come to the conclusion that I have to see my food intake as a spiritual issue. I need to start treating my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and honor God with that temple. Not to say that eating honey buns is a sin, but, I need to recognize that hitting that vending machine and eating 2 honey buns a day is hurting my body and does not honor God. As with all things, I need to turn to God in prayer when struggling against this desire. He does care. |
Turning to God instead of food is a profound statement. We have wonderful food all around us and when dissaponted, angry, bored or dissatisfied it is so easy to turn to food for comfort. God is never too busy to be concerned with you . He loves you and wants the best for you.

Have you tried reading the book "Made to Crave?" I'm reading it now and it's amazing. It's about how we use food for comfort, or rewards, where we should use the comfort and joy that God gives us. It's a great book.

CHERYL ~ yes, that can happen; I've heard others talk about this phenomenon and I have experienced it too. One of the biggest problems with what you are doing is that you are snacking on 2 honey buns which have no nutrient value to the body at all (other than pure sugar-induced energy); they are excess calories that are sabotaging your efforts, and on a daily basis.
If you can't have a honeybun once a month only, then it may be what we call "A TRIGGER FOOD", which sets off cravings & binging for some people. You can choose a substitute for that instead, like a honey granola bar ( which is only 120 calories verses 500+ for the honeybun). Honey buns are NOT a healthy food choice; and you know that but maybe you need to start seeing them for what they are ... POISON for your body! This may sound extreme but I find it helps me to pay attention to what I am putting in my mouth. I am starting to ask myself -- is this a healthy food choice or not? Is this the most excellent choice I can make for my health & my body or not? So, if you say NOT, then ask yourself WHY you want to put that unhealthy substance into your body? And why 2 of them? Every day? WHY are you sabotaging yourself & your health this way? I am suspecting something that many people don't admit to or talk about very often, if at all. It is a kind of ANGER & RESENTMENT about not being able to eat whatever we want just becuz it tastes good and we want it. So we need to confess that -- and ask the LORD to help us with this temptation. HE knows all about that ~ the simple temptation that food can have on human beings (MATTHEW: "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of GOD"). Use scripture to fight those buns, if needs be ... ;) I don't think eating any food is a sin; but when we choose to eat something that isn't a basic, healthy food and too much of it, then we have a choice problem. You didn't say that you were eating them in reaction to an emotional issue but, just becuz they were there. That means that vending machine is somewhere too handy. Does it not have any healthier snacks in it like nuts, raisins, or a granola bar? This annoys me about vending machines -- too often they are full of high-calorie junk foods only! I went through this on my DH's birthday recently; I had one piece of cake and one 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream but for 2 days afterwards, I was having cravings again. So, when my birthday comes next fall, I am not having birthday cake but something else like a healthy homemade dessert that doesn't cause a binge for me. We have to take notice that some foods can cause us problems; and I do think they are physical and spiritual as well. So, ask the HOLY SPIRIT to give you back SELF-CONTROL through GOD'S POWER in your heart, body, mind & soul; then start over again tomorrow. If over-eating makes you feel bad about yourself, then that affects you spiritually too. I really don't think GOD wants us beating ourselves up over food though. Sometimes, I think the  likes to use this to discourage us and keep us from a positive, joyous frame of mind; when we should be thanking GOD for His bountiful provision and praising him for it daily. Some people see weight issues as only a physical problem; others say it is spiritual, but I believe it is a combination of three issues ~ physical, emotional/mental, and spiritual ... and all three need to be healed in order to make a lasting change. Hopefully, a combination of practical & spiritual ideas may help you in some way. Praying that you can get back on track very soon ... PS ~ do you say a prayer or grace or blessing upon the food you eat? Meals & snacks? Out loud, or even just to yourself? It is much harder to ask the LORD to bless a junky food choice to our good health, isn't it? ;) ie Thank you for this food & bless it to our good health; and us to thy good service? :D |
I used to feel the same way you did, I have been writing a Bible study for years, and I was still not convinced that overeating was that big of a sin. Then I decided ask God to help me write one of the days of my study on the subject. I asked for wisdom and he showed me some amazing things!
The following is an excerpt from the study God gave me. Sorry it's so long, and you might want to get some tissues handy, it is a real tearjerker. Quote:

I agree with the recomendation to read Lysa's' Made to Crave' book. I read it, gave it to my Mom to read, she read it, then bought her own copy and we are reading it together a chapter a week.
1 Corinthians 6 tells us that 'everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial'. Lysa quotes a commentary that says 'some actions are not sinful in themselves but they are not appropriate because they can control our lives and lead us away from God". If I feel that I can't be happy without a piece of chocolate, then who/what am I depending on to make me happy? Certainly not God, not even myself. |
Good read I agree too :)
