Good Morning

I got in 16 miles over the weekend:

7 on Friday in about 65 minutes
9 on Saturday in about 85 minutes

YP1 08-07-2006 01:42 PM

5.7 miles this morning with 7.7k on the bike after that. I've decided that from hereon in I'm going to listen to my body rather than following my schedule. I know that I should do two or three more long runs (one will be the 30k race), and I know that I need to keep some consistency with my other runs to keep a base, but until the taper starts I'll just do what feels right. My knee and hip have been good all day (fingers crossed it's the new shoes!) so if all goes to plan when I wake up I'm aiming for 8 - 9 in the morning, if not I'll take a cross training day and attempt to run again on Wednesday.

3 miles today and trying to figure out when I will get in a longer run this week.

Lucky13 08-08-2006 09:59 AM

Just a quick 25 minute run last night - I have at least 6 miles to get through tonight - glad I rented some Sex and the City DVD's to bide my time this week!

Have a great day!

Did my 6.5 miles on Sunday - I beat DF well and truly!

He used to be the one racing off ahead, this time he didn't want to keep up with me, so he almost went home! However we found an off-road trail and he came along, but I was still jogging while he walked and occasionally ran to keep up! :D

YP1 08-08-2006 03:26 PM

I didn't do the 8 miler because I realised I didn't have time, but did do 5.3, which was OK. My knee is MUCH better this week, so maybe tomorrow will be the day I try 8 miles again, because I'll have more time tomorrow morning to fit it in.

YP1 08-09-2006 02:35 AM

The 8 miler is done. It was more of a psychological hurdle than a physical one, because the past two times I've got to that distance my hip has started to hurt so I was quite scared it would happen again, but touch wood everything seems to be OK.

Lucky13 08-09-2006 08:37 AM

6-miler last night in 56 minutes - not my best but I'll take it!

No run tonight for me - co-ed softball game tonight!

Was sick again Monday--enough to take off from work. Pushed off Tuesday's run until today, and got in 3 miles this morning. It was supposed to be two segments with one walk break, and got through the first OK, but the last 0.75 mile or so I was just struggling--run/walk/run/walk. Proud of myself that I got through it. Next run is Friday, a short 2 miler, but supposed to be continuous. Tomorrow I bike to work, 18 miles. DH and I trade the car there--he'll bike home.

Helen, good to hear about your hip. Lucky, have fun at softball. 2F good for you for beating your husband! Midwife, good luck scheduling. Ilene! Where are you? Are you running??

It is HOT for everyone else too?? Ack. I am STILL sweating.

Anne

It's not HOT here, I'm making the most of it!

I've just been trying to plan out a 20 mile route for the weekend, at the moment I'm considering getting the train 20 miles out of town and running back along the canal, which should be nice and flat and traffic free, I'm just scared that even the train takes 25 minutes to cover the journey!

Tomorrow is meant to be a cross training day, but I might actually run if my knee's feeling good because I seem to have some energy back in my legs :) Not a long or hard one, just a gentle little trot out.

Lucky13 08-10-2006 10:10 AM

Couldn't sleep this morning so I went ahead and did my run today (woke up at 3:45 am and tried to fall back asleep until 4:30!)

Got in 4.5 mles but I may try to get in 2 or 3 more tonight after work.

Have a great day!

YP1 08-10-2006 05:23 PM

4.4 miles this morning, I actually managed to pick the speed up a bit today because it was shorter than my normal runs, even though I was intending quite a gentle trot out.

Rest tomorrow, then 20 miles on Saturday.

Hello all you advanced runners. I posted this same question out on the Advice on becoming..forum, but would love to hear from you guys.

Next week I will be on my Wk7 of the C25K program which consists of 25+ continual minutes for each run for the next 3 weeks when I will officially graduate! I really see running become my foundation sport for the future since I love it so much. It seems that you guys run every day long and short distances. When do you think it would be okay for me to start planning to do the same thing?

I have been wondering if it would be a good idea to run the program (25+ minutes) still every other day, but on the alternate days maybe continue to do some short interval running and work on my distance times (ie get faster). Will this be an overdo? I've never ran every day due to not wanting to burn out or get injured. But now that I am slowly conditioning my body, I would like to ease into being able to run every day. Any advice or suggestions?

AnneWonders 08-11-2006 10:44 AM

Hi softballmom. There are 2 general rules of thumb that are pretty good for most people: the 10% rule and the easy/hard rule. The first is not to increase your weekly distance by more than 10% in a given week. So if you are running 3 miles 3 times a week (or about 10 miles total), you could add a mile to one of your runs, or break it into 4, 2 mile runs with a long run of 3 miles one day. Whatever works best for you. The easy/hard rule says after one hard day of running (speedwork, tempo, hills, long slow distance), do an easy day of running or crosstraining. You can still get injured even if you follow these two rules, but they really help. And you have a lot of room to play around in terms of how many days to run, how long to run, what type of run. BTW: it is possible to do a 'hard' workout when crosstraining and those count too.

I like this book for lots of good running info: The Complete Book fo Running for Women by Claire Kowalchik. Helped me a lot when I got started. I should read it again, since it has been a few years and I'm basically starting over.

I got in my two continuous miles today, two minutes faster than last time. Feeling better, training is finally gaining some traction again. That, and it isn't quite so hot.

Gosh I must go way slow- I do 15 minute miles still, when I go faster I feel like I am going to throw up. Am I breathing wrong? This morning I must say I ran 4 miles in 45 mins, so I guess I am going a little faster, oh and it felt GOOD! I am always very proud of myself if I can run straight with no walking breaks and not stopping for any reason and beat my last time. But you know if I can go 4 miles in an hour Im still happy, because I did it.
I've lost 23 lbs so Im good with that too :)
I dont post that much but wanted to say hi to everyone and see how you all were doing.
