Question

I've been working out for sometime, and I'm seeing results.

The only things I do at the gym are 2 eliptical machines (one moves your arms and the other doesn't) and occasionally lift weights.
Does soing the same work out daily hinder your weight loss? Should I be using the stationary bikes are something else? I usually don't like to use other things because I don't get the same results as the eliptical. I almost die when I try to run.

I'm asking if my body is somehow used to the eliptical machine, and now maybe I need to incorporate other things into my workout?

Hi :)

I think a lot of people will tell you to "shake it up" a bit and change your cardio method. I won't be one of those people, though :D . I've been doing the elliptical 3 days a week for a LONG time. It's the only cardio I do. In my opinion, "cardio is cardio." The goal is to get your heart rate up, burn off the glucose in your blood, and start tapping into your stored energy (body fat) -- so (again, in my opinion) it doesn't matter if you do the same cardio every day or not, as long as you're getting your heart rate up. I can't stand the stationary bike (or any other cardio machine for that matter) and I despise running. The elliptical is the only cardio I can do without going bananas.

I suggest paying very close attention to the intensity, resistance, and elevation of your elliptical workouts. Be sure that as your cardio strength and stamina improve, you continue to challenge yourself by switching up to higher levels off resistance and elevation.

Do you weight train? I highly recommend it, and that's a whole other story altogether as far as "shaking it up."

Good luck :) .

Thanks for that, I was worried that maybe I was working out the wrong way.

The stationary bike is so...boring, and the amount of calories I burn is nowhere near what I get on the eliptical.
And the treadmill is completely out of question unless I want to have a heart attack in the rec center. I don't want to walk on it because all of the people that use it are like...running for their lives, and I don't want to look like a turtle next to them.

I do pay attention to the intensity. I just recently changed my resistance from 5 to 7 on one machine, and 8 to 9 on another. I usually have a goal of 700 calories, and lately I've been getting to it easier, and faster, so I changed my resistances. And I do the cross training wokrout on one of the machines (it works different muscle groups).

As far as weight training, I don't it as much as I should. I hate it when there are a bunch of men and there. Basically the only time I weight train is when the weight room is virtually empty. I know, I NEED to start doing it.

Kate,
What kind of elliptical do you use/recommend? (I realize I still need to try before I buy) I am in the market for one and the more I try to research the more I am getting confused :?: Price is not a problem, but I have seen reports on even so called "high end" models getting consumer complaints. Just curious on your comments as you have been a long time user! Thx!

Oh geez....hmmmm....LOL, I'm on the darn thing so much and I'm not sure what brand it is!!! :dizzy: I THINK it's a Precor (or something like that).

What are some other elliptical companies that start with a "P" (in case "Precor" doesn't actually exist :D )?

illinichick 12-04-2005 07:42 PM

I've seen lots of Precor ellipticals, so I think you're right, Kate :)

pumpingiron 12-04-2005 07:48 PM

Yes, Precor is one! Supposed to be good too. I will have to give it a test run...

Glad I could help :) . Just don't ask me what model it is cuz I haven't the faintest idea :D . I could check on Tuesday though, if you like (that's the next time I'm going to the gym).
